Should I move up to this 911??
I have a chance to sell my excellent condition 86 944 (completely sorted) that i've owned for a number of years and move up to a 1980 911. This 911 has a rebuilt motor (not original to the car) with the upgrades 25k ago, new clutch, heat exchangers are fine, but it needs paint, tires, targa top refurbished, true miles unknown, a/c in a box, interior is nice but color was changed and some bits are not original or missing, has a few wiring issues. It drives tight, brakes good, runs great, just needing the cosmetics per the seller . I can get the 911 for $9500. I could swing the car, and definitely would enjoy having a 911, dont need concours and just want a solid driver but don't want to get over my head. I don't do my own work and a budget of maybe $2k/yr max. Would I be dumb to give up an excellent 944 for this?

Sounds like this one may break your heart and piggy bank. Enjoy your 944 and save the dough to get something clean and documented.
There is a saying about 911s... They are all $20k cars.
There is another saying about Porsches in general..... The most expensive one to own is cheapest to buy.

^^^^What Scott said. Pass on this one. The 944 is an excellent car, but if you still want a 911, wait till you can buy one that needs little in the way of being able to enjoy it right away (17-20k). Otherwise you will be spending bigger bucks up-front and in the long run.

I swapped a 944 for a 911 and have never looked back .. however my situtation is a little different. Although not wealthy at all money didn't even enter the equation. The car i bought was pretty solid, and i spent better part of a year working on it on my own before it ever hit the road. A porsche 911 is not realy a car to own if you are on a tight budget, or don't work on the car yourself, individually they carry some risk , but together is a disaster waiting to happen.

Find a more unusual 911. Perhaps a solid 1983 "euro" SC Coupe. A bonus is factory delete sunroof and A/C. 1983 because it was the final and most evolved version of the SC line. Euro because it has a power-to-weight ratio similar to Carrera models thru 1989, with 207 HP vs 180 HP in US version.
