Engine Oil Cooler....bs or good stuff?
Is this cooler that takes the place of the S shaped hose between the oil tank and the engine oil cooler of any use or is it bs? It claims 500sq inch and lowers oil temp 10 degrees. Anybody know anything about this ebay item?

Many things wrong with that setup, the worst of which are the fittings. Its not something I'd put on ANY car, much less a 911.

Performance Products (800.423.3173) sells it. There ad claims that road and bench tests have shown a 15 degree reduction in oil temp. I have not bought it but I've thought about it "for that extra margin of safety". I think it depends on your car, your climate and how you drive. It's about $195 after PCA discount.

I like the safety margin that the metal would allow should you run over something. I never quite understood why Porsche would not better protect the vital factory hose from something coming from the ground that could easily damage it (BIG time problem, should that happen).
I keep a spare hose in the bonnet,..not quite sure (now) what it would buy me in a failure, as I don't carry around the necc'y oil that would be needed to complete such a roadside repair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best,

If that piece is hitting the gound you got WAY bigger problems than an oil hose
..and if it did i would like to think it would compress and give a little. Actually I think your oil tank is lower than this hose so my first comment still satnds ..
anyhoo .... i would rather the hose compress than rip off a big hunk of metal under the car as it doesn't look to secure anyway .....
for me "it is fit ....... for the pit" ..... !!!!

A guy named Bob Booth from here in Oakland was probably the first to do the heat sink oil cooler in the '70's for rotary Mazdas. Installed them down the sides of the cars, like lake pipes on a hot rod. (They had factory installed undersized external radiator coolers, too.) There were several sizes, and they were made in many sizes to also be installed at automatic transmission and power steering coolers. I never saw any temperature decrease after a friend put them on his car. But what did I know, I was just a teenager............ Bob came down to the shop I worked at and wanted to beat me into the previous year when I questioned their effectiveness to a potential customer.

Could be the same thing. Not sure about the size of the inside through. $23 if you get your own fittings.
Remeber that this type of cooler is going to be working even in the winter unlike the front cooler and engine cooler that are thermostaticly opened and closed. Summer cars only, unless you wrap it in the winter.

I ran one for years without any issue. It's no replacement for a front cooler. It has a huge amount of surface area (it's finned inside and out). Its location in the oil system is less an issue, in my opinion, than its location on the car itself, which is not a place where you get lots of cool air.
I never did any testing with mine, but I would think of it as a '5-degree item.' And I think the problem is that if you have insufficient cooling, you probably have more than a 5-degree problem. And if you have a 5-degree problem, then a cheaper solution is to improve the airflow through your cooler up front.
But I would guess there are some situations where this would help, as part of a larger plan of attack. I can't think of any downside to it, other than its cost.

Apparently additional cooling was/is needed since by '88 a more efficient radiator AND fan/blower was added in the passenger side wheelwell front.
