As an aside, before disconnecting a Bosch fuel injection electrical component, it is crucial to remove the spring wire retainer first. Otherwise the likely result will be a broken connector. I think both male and female connectors are available aftermarket, but I don't have a source. It's much easier and smarter to remove the retainer with a small pick or screwdriver, then replace it before re-connecting.

Ed, I knew it was going to be something small like that. Still, I'm glad that you found it before heading out. Makes enjoying the scream of race engines that much sweeter.

The problem with knowing too much about the cars is you expect the worst and work from there.
It is always the simple stuff that gets you. Had you found this in the highway yesterday, you would probably still be burning fuel on the run.

Good to hear, ED. You found it while I was thinking, you're so darn **** about details I had discounted wire harness connectors! I was actually remembering a couple of random fuel pump failures that my customers reported, but shutting down like your car did is really rare!
Have fun at the race!

I was thinking more ignition/sensor type than fuel. Fuel issues usually splutter to a stop. Glad you found your problem and without much drama... Have fun at LeMans - I am jealous!

I was doing the engineering (worst-case) thing: getting a new DME on order.
Ed, you fucher. What a great read...should be called the "24 Hours before Lemans".......
Safest travels to you and yours',

The only time ours quit on us was shortly after I detailed it for Parade. I had pulled the connectors off the ignition module and didn't get one of them properly seated. Twenty eight miles latter it was on a rollback headed home. After some Rennlist advice, I bumped the connector and it fell off as well. Lesson learned, check my work!!

Glad you found the problem so easily Ed. I had the same damn thing happen to me on the freeway at night - 40 miles from home. I had it flat bedded to a parking lot nearby and left it 'till the next day. I borrowed a friend's DME and fuel pump relay and headed out to the car the next day with another Porsche buddy. I swapped out the relay and no change. Then I swapped out DME's and she ran great. I drove it home on my buddy's DME and then brought the bad DME to Steve Wong's house the next day, whereupon he found a ton of bad solder joints on the circuit board. He resoldered all of them and it was good to go again.
Until you mentioned the Head temp sensor lead, I was going to tell you to check out the DME itself...
