Stupid one --- Fan belt Really?
I just did the valve adjustment over the weekend and am buttoning things back up. I bought a new Porsche fan belt (9.5mm width) and have been unsuccessful getting the pulley half on the shaft.
The pulley wants to go on in a cantered way but I can't get is to square up completely due to the belt being in the way.
I've got 5 shims on the inside and 1 on the outside.
Any tricks from the veterans?
And please don't point and laugh, I'm thenthitive

I usually have to fiddle a bit to .. are you sure the length of the belt is the same You could try adding all the shims in, . i find different manufacture of belts require different shims . For me the challenge is getting the shims to stay square without falling down . If it canters you can try turning it a little.

Yes. I've got it almost maxed out on the "loose" setting
One more thing.... Can I put all six between the pulley halves or does a shim need to be present between the cupped washer and pulley half?

Yeah, you can go all 6 in. Sounds like Porsche sold you an SC belt? Compare it to the old one first, and make sure you have the right belt. Compare width as well as length. Get the nut on after the cup washer, and then push the shims into alignment as the nut is incrementally tightened finger tight, then once they are all under the cup washer and aligned, go for the wrench.

If the length of the belt is printed on it, or the packaging, check what you have. A length of 725 mm will fit, but it can be quite tight, depending on the pulleys you have. Maybe you need 730 or 735, to get the desired fit and slackness after it's installed. They all will work, with different degrees of free play.

once you get the shims centered, put wour wrench on it and tighten the nut. The key is to allow the pulley(and crank) to turn as youe tighten the nut. This will avoid the pulley halves pinching the belt. Once it's snug and the pulley halves are seated, you can then counter the pulley with the spanner wrench as you tighten the nut

It may be the correct spec...but with different manufactures some designs are thicker and wider than others even with the same numbers on them. I had the same issue with my 83SC a/c belt..my suggestion is go to the local auto part store and get one just a little longer rather than swetting it. Not only that...if it doesn't fit you can go back again and exchange it for a little bigger or smaller one. I have 2 useless belts from Pelicans with the correct specs on it and had to finally go to pep boys and fiddle around a little. Maybe the chinese use different rulers than the germans.

Thanks guys. I bought this one from the Porsche dealer so it may have sat on the shelf a while. Perhaps the rubber hardened and shrunk a bit? I dunno. All I know is it ain't going on easy and I don't want to over stress the alternator shaft and end up having to replace bearings in the near future.

I installed the old belt and only used four shims between the pulley halves. I'm good to go.
I'll be firing up the car tonight after I re-install the cat heat shield and refill with the cheep Autozone VR1 20-50 that Ed turned us onto.
