Road Trip! Cherohala Skyway and Blue Ridge Parkway. Observations and pics.
So I just got back from a 5 day roadtrip. I drove out to Kentucky to visit with family then took two days to drive home the long way over the Cherohala Skyway and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It was an awesome drive! The weather was great, the roads were awesome and my Stuttgart Screamer performed flawlessly!! 1582 miles in total, the best parts were the twisties of course, 1.5 quarts of oil consumed which was not too bad since I was running her hard and for the record I got average of 22.6 mpg overall.
Most of my driving so far has been relatively short weekend drives until this trip.
Some observations:
1. I absolutely L-O-V-E Love this car!!
2. The 911 is a far better car than I am a driver.
3. I need to get a dead pedal.
4. I need an adjustable throttle pedal so I can heel-toe. I did a lot of hard braking and quick double-clutching, but I could not do it at the same time.
5. That damn CASIS light has got to go.
6. The standard seats are very comfortable.
7. Slow in, fast out works like a charm.
8. Power... I need more power. I see an exhaust and a chip in my future...
If you ever get the chance to drive in eastern TN or western NC, you will have a blast. I'm sure there are many more roads I'll need to explore in that part of the world.
Here are some pics from my trip. Enjoy. Paul

Not familiar with the Cherohala Skyway. I used to drive Skyline Drive from Front Royal VA and then the Blue Ridge to Smokey Mtn. Nat'l Park 20-30 years ago on my Bimmer motorcycle. Best 600ish miles of recreational specific (no commercial vehicles allowed) road on the eastern side of the continent IMO.

Agreed. I went to college at Virginia Tech and once I blasted straight up the highway to Front Royal just so I could take the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge all the way back to Blacksburg. I did that all in one day. ...when I was 20 which was umm, a while ago.

Paul, "it doesn't get much better than this" does it?
"We make hill climbs that high out here."
yes, but you typically start at a higher base elev.
in the East, base is usually less than a thousand.
& pitch is another story altogether...
a friend (now living in CO), pro cyclist (10th ranked world amateur, twice US Olympic Team, Saturn) told us locals that having ridden all over the world, some of the steepest climbs he ever faced were in the SE US. (I bet the humidity didn't help, either)

Thank you for sharing your story and pics of your beautiful car in that gorgeous scenery. I just love the venetian blue color on your car. The car's paint looks pristine. You should be a very proud daddy.

AWESOME...my back yard. This area is special but elevation is a relative. Lance Armstrong trained for the Tour on Grandfather Mountain and beech Mountain.

It was a little tongue in cheek, but I'm 20 minutes from Palomar Mountain where we move up a few thousand feet in just over 7 miles of road. One of the most fun drives I've ever had going up, and I've scared myself the two times I've driven in earnest going down.
We do start at sea level here.

Thanks everyone for your enthusiastic comments! I had such a blast that I just HAD to share - I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. I love the backdrop of the rolling hills and mountains behind my car.
The most fun of course was the getting there. I also love reading roadtrip stories, and yes it does not get any better than this, and I wish I lived in your backyard, and I most certainly am a proud daddy!!

when DON'T we plant tongue in cheek around here?
ALL great uphills in America must be driven!
as to flying downhill - I stopped that yrs ago too, after scaring myself similarly - I thought to myself, "no wonder they don't have a European Downhill Championship" - leave that to the crazed (young cyclists & skiers) & watch...

A few years back I "did" N. California: Napa, Sonoma, Carmel, Monterey, S.F., and spent a few nights in Yosemite. We took a raft down the America River with a group of tourist. I told them I was from the mountains of NC. The guide chuckled and said "what you call mountains, we call hills", I replied "what you call rivers we call creeks" We had a blast and I don't draw a comparison on any of our lovely land, but my time in South Eastern (Sitka) Alaska trumps most places I've been in terms of numbers.
