Default Need HONEST opinion about a 74' 911 project...

I dont know a whole lot about what these cars are worth but im looking for a project car to restore back and have some fun with on the street and track.. I dont want to overspend so I have been looking for a deal from maybe someone who doesnt know what they have or just hurting to dump it.. Here is what i have found.. I attached the pics below.. The owner seems very Honest.. The motor runs but doesnt sound great.. It has good compression but might be carb Issues.. Even assuming motor isnt good what is it worth?? I can get it for 8k im pretty sure.. Its a 2.7L motor.. Has widebody Conversion.. He says floors are good which i have read they rust thru.. Thanks for the advice in advance..

The floors aren't the only thing to look at-the entire body on a '74 has the possibility of rust. With the widebody 964 conversion, we don't know if the parts used are glass or steel. The 2.7 motor is probably the most unloved, but they can be done right. They probably take more $ to do right than other engines in the pre'89 cars.

I'd say that $8K is not a real bargain for a homebrew such as this with a suspect 2.7 motor.

Thanks for the input.. I was thinking i would put a 3.0L in it anyway but if the shell itself your saying is not a good deal or bargain ill keep looking.. I havent seen it in person but the owner says it has some rust nothing more than surface and nothing cancerous.. They used steel for the conversion i know that..

You'd never know the extent of the rust unless you stripped it. I'm not saying that a '74 is automatically a rust bucket, but it wasn't until '76 that corrosion protection was part of the recipe. I was only pointing out the fact that is isn't just the floors.

If you want to make a fun track car, it would seem you could find a solid SC or Carrera for not a lot more. One that you could make into what you want.

is it local for you?

just like the 997, a new motor CAN set you back quite a bit...maybe $10k or more (guess) and the car has been thru a rough life with someone hacking and chopping, welding and adding things to make it some form of track rat - surely re-painted and to what standard - its a BIG project and one that will require a ton of learning and understanding what to do and how to do it....

get someone who really knows these cars to do a thourough examination of the car and give you the report... hell if you are planning on spending $8k.... $300 to make sure its what you think it is.... is money WELL SPENT

my $0.02 - RUN FOREST RUN !!

any suggestion on places to look?? Ebay brings a premium price.. Craigslist you can get lucky..

Located in South Florida.. Looking for something around 10k to start as a project.. I realize there are some better maintained cars out there but id like to put some time and $$ into the car over the next 6 months or so to get it nice rather than buy someone elses completed project..

Why so much focus on "the deal"? Spending even $5K more up front on something of known/decent quality could save you $10K+ on the back end.

You mention something about track use. No way, no how, are you going to have a reliable, trackworthy 911 for less than $20K, all in. (And sadly, a good torsion bar car is pushing 1.5-2X that now which butts it up against 964s and even 993s.) Unless you luck into a lot of cast offs and do EVERYTHING yourself. And if that truly is your budget, there are always cars out there worthy of consideration.

Im focusing on the deal because i want to spend MY TIME fixing it up not pay for what someone else spent their time doing.. its a project.. those are best chosen by finding someone who could not complete it and just wants to unload it.. Saving a few grand on the front end help when dumping in money on the back end.. I dont really care if it costs me 30k to finalize the project but if i can start with a 8k car that needs 22k rather than a 15k that needs 20 id prefer to do that.. I have ability to do all the labor myself..

Mike
