Default PPI for the '84 Ruby Coupe from Momentum

This is the continuation of the thread (not sure how to copy the link):
"What do you guys think about this 84 coupe?"

OK guys, drove the car out to Rennsport in Seally today.

You know, some of us find out the hard way what the limits of our driving skills are. Hopefully this is done in a "safe" environment such as the track and not on I-10. I was heading west, when low and behold the car in front of me swerves to miss a tire carcass. He hooks it hard to the right, fish tales, then over corrects with opposite lock, fish tales the other way until he is now at 180 degrees from the rest of us. I had to brake hard and swerve to the right to miss him. Just what I need!! I haven't even bought the friggin car, and i'm almost involved in an accident. But I digress. OK, on to the PPI..

The results for the leakdown were really good. All cylinders 1% - 2%. The main issue found was that rattle I had mentioned. Turns out the crank pulley was slightly loose. When the mechanic would rotate the engine to get to the next TDC, then turn the opposite direction, he noted that the pulley would turn about 1/2 degree before the crank would. I think the rattle comes from a combination of loose pulley and the engine hunting at idle, it surges and then stalls (mechanic said adjust the air/fuel set screw, if not then probably bad 02 sensor?). The dealership said they would fix the crank pulley issue. I'm not feeling terribly confident that the dealership will want to fix it right, though, if it means dropping the engine to drill a bigger hole in the crank. I'll have to stay on top of them to make sure they do, I guess. So what would the recommended fix call for? If they go for bigger hole, then i will have a non-stanadard pulley?

Dealer said the would also repair the warped front brake rotors and the non functioning power mirrors.

Oh, Oil pressure. The oil pressure when warm and going about 75mph was at 4 bar while the temperature stayed at the 1/3 mark. So looks like it's good. I concluded that if the leakdown numbers where that good, then the lubrication system has to be OK.

Mechanic said transmission/shifter was fine. He recommended Wevo shifter if I wanted self centering. Anybody got experience with Wevo?

Lastly, i will definitely need to upgrade the A/C. Will start researching rennsair and others. I remember excellence doing an article on A/C upgrade about 5 or 6 years ago. Will have to dig it up.

Thanks for looking and thanks for your comments.

working on a wevo set up myself - there is a coupler ($200) a gate shifer ($600) and tranny parts I have not priced -

I almost never use AC in a car, I have new cars, old cars and its just not a big deal to me. When its warm, I like the windows open. Radios are another thing I care very little about. (my car came with some $1800 radio set up... if I could swap it for suspension/shift/or motor parts I would instal an 8 track and be fine

scary incident, glad you are OK

Sounds like a pretty good car. The main issue is the crank pulley.

I have a Wevo shifter and it is very, very nice. However, the spring-centering can be accomplished much less expensively with the Seine Systems kit. If you do that, all the shifter bushings and the shift rod coupler, you will have most of the real improvement that is available in the shift linkage covered. I think the Wevo gets extra points for a very solid and smooth feel to the lever (the side-spring design is very well done and the lever itself has a substantial feel). However, you do pay dearly for that compared to the Seine System. The Rennshift system also has very good reviews and is in a similar cost range to Wevo. I also got the tall-**** option of the Wevo which I really like:

Other items that can impact shift quality are the transaxle mounts and the clutch adjustment. However, no amount of shift linkage improvements will cure syncro issues or such, but the PPI should have identified those.

AMJF, thanks for the info! Those shift components do look of very nice quality. Wow, the interior of your car looks super. I guess you had it redone?

Thank you Tango & Whalebird,

Yes, I re-did the interior. I re-dyed all the leather and put in new carpet. It looked quite tired before... The interior of your car looks in significantly better shape than mine did. I also like your color combo. Cosmetically the only thing I would eventually change is the wheels, but that is just a personal taste thing.

AFJM, how did you recondition the plastic on the doors and dash? It all looks brand new in the picture.

I completely agree on the wheels. I will probably go with Fuchs unless I can find an awesome deal on some BBS LMs.

Still worried about how the dealership is going to address the pulley issue.

Well, I pulled out of this deal. Wasn't confident in the dealership mechanic at all. Now looking at a car in Arkansas.
