Default turn signal switch interchange

i was wondering if anyone knows if a 74-75 turn signal switch is interchangeable with a 76-89 switch?

the headlights are completly out in the 75 except for when you pull the lever back. probably caused by the MArchal S.E.V. headlights that are in it. since i already have a spare 76-89 switch i could install if they are interchangeable.

besides the stalk being pot metal instead of plastic and the arrow logos being slightly different. they both have all of the same wiring colors and connections.

84turbolook does yours have relays? I could not find any relays on mine - but it does have H4's!

just because it has H4 s does not mean it has relays .. stock lights do no thave relays either . That is why the hi/lo beam switch fails , it has the full headlight current running through it. The relays can and should be added any time. read the repair thread I reposted , it is all in there .

Im figuring the switch is bad beacuse of the smoke that was coming out of it. the car had
Marchal SEV H1-H3 headlights in it. hi and lo beams were both on at the same time.
flipping the hi-lo switch just made it flash for a second and back the way it was.
i took out the Marchals and installed standard H4 replacements and still had the problem. flipped the switch a few times and got smoke and no Hi or Lo lights afterwards.

no it does not have relays but im going to add them at the same time.

Well i had a chance to get the switch swapped out after work today. So Dave and G-50, the 76-89 switch fits and works perfectly. so if you dont care if you have the original metal style switch, go for it

And to go into more detail, with a side to side comparison. the switch lever ends up in the exact same spot. sticks out the same length too. every screw hole lined up no problem.
the only thing different that doesnt even make a difference is on the later switch, 2 of the connections have a larger plastic insulator around the connector and the early switch only has rubber heat shrink. the connections still plugged right on and were fully insulated (actually better insulated than before)

Listen to the Iceman. Without relays you will fry the next switch, too. Cosmetically the switches changed (between those years) but functionally they should work.

Yes yes, - I know all about the relays -

Really - even with stock bulbs you should add relays for the headlights - especially with the stalk switch design and it being such as paint in the *** to change.

I'll put relays in mine when I can - and some nice 80/100 bulbs for those H4's so I can light up the night.
