I'm a 993 guy, but a friend is thinking of pulling the trigger on a '79 Turbo.
Can you guys give me your thoughts:
Original Paint
32,000 miles
Tripe Black
Nice condition (interior and body)
Leaks a little oil
Seller is asking $30,000
Is this car overpriced?

Expect deterioration if you put it into service. low mile cars, especially turbos, can go downhill quick and I think this should factor into the purchase.

Price seems in the ballpark if the miles are accurate and the condition is commensurate.
'79s used to go for big bucks, back in the early 80s, when it looked like the Turbo would never return to the US. It has big collector's value for a while.
But IMO the re-intro of the US Turbo in '86 has taken that away. For low 30s, I think he can get an 86-88 Turbo with similar miles, fairly easily (may not be able to get an '89, which commands a premium b/c of last year production, and the only year with a 5 instead of 4 speed! But maybe can get an 89 for that price if lucky). A better car.

a pretty, 30 yr old, low miles Porsche can hold some surprises. the large range of values is 'cause similar-seeming examples vary considerably in actual condition. cost to make good is also considerable. gotta have a ppi.

Is this anywhere near California (or an OE smog equipment jurisdiction), where they'll be looking for thermal reactors? As above, there are too many US '86- cars to even consider the earlier cars. Not to mention a 930 isn't exactly "all that" when a late model Camry or Accord V-6 has similar HP.
Bottom line, I think old 930's make horrible first Porsches. And I think those in the fog of "good deal" or price shopping compound the error.

What he said^^^
For a boost addiction, a 944 turbo can be fun. A 930 is an awesome car no doubt, but very expensive when that low mile pressure cooker starts leaking pressure.

As stated by others...the price is in the ballpark, but its a big park and condition is key.
I agree that in a smog state like Cali, a later model may be a better choice. If smog isn't an issue, I personally wouldn't put a premium on an '86-'88 vs. a '78-'79 (assuming mileage and condition are equal). In the 80's these cars only got heavier and had more junk put on them, with no increase in HP. I like the fact that the '78-'79 has manual seats, no footwell blowers, and no lambda computer.
My first and only Porsche is a 930...expensive? Yes. Horrible? Quite the opposite...I'm very much in love despite the cost. As far as I know, cheap and Porsche don't belong in the same universe together (that goes for 944 turbos too).
