Default Starter going bad ...thoughts/advice?

Hey all,

Some advice on replacing a starter in my Trackmeister, if you would (82SC).

1. First off, it is intermittant, with it failing to start maybe 1 out of 50+ starts. Not "horrible," but I had to get a bump start yesterday at the track ...really annoying!! Battery voltage seems good, and I got no solenoid click, no sound, nothing! When I got home, though (car cooled as it's trailered), she fired right up just like normal. So I think the batt is strong despite being 3-4 yrs old. Replace the starter? Or alternative fix? Cheap fix??

2. How's the R&R on this? Easy? Tips?

3. If I need a starter, should I get the high-torque one or the regular starter? From what I understand the HT starter is lighter. Any disadvantages? I want cheap but with longevity the key!

4. Best place for one? Pelican? Or is local the best with a core replacement (I'd like to avoid shipping my core back for money back ...kind of a hassle).

I'd appreciate any advice and/or specific recommendations. Thanks folks!!

Hi,
I had the hot starter syndrome in my 83SC...when it got hot, the starter would do nothing untill the engine would cool down. If you do a search you will see this is not an uncommon problem. I bought
the high torque smaller starter..but it would not disengage. I was told by the supplier that in 6% of the cases they have had problems and the did not have a shin available. So, I simply bought stock starter and have not had any problems.

They cook, especially if you track the car and there's no transmission cooler.

It's a pain to change -- unless you like the idea of hugging your transaxle. The high-torque one is definitely worth getting. (It's basically a Toyota part, which I mean in the old 'solidly engineered' sense of the word Toyota. )

I have also heard of stories about the HT starter messing up the starter gear on the flywheel. I have a pic somewhere from a Rennlister who somehow shot a pic through the starter hole of a bunged up flywheel gear. Other guys who have not had problems swear by them.

I guess if you have a good rebuilder nearby the easiest and maybe best thing to do is to have them rebuild your old one. I have had good luck with rebuilt Bosch starters, but they're about $150 each.

Hmmm, rebuilt bosch for 150 aint horrid.

Any thoughts or tips for R&R welcome. Thanks for the input, all!

Well, parts sit a long time on the shelf out in these parts, not like So Calif. I might have gotten one that's 10 years old, haha.
