1978 911SC...what's it worth
What's a one owner silver/black targa with 38,000 miles in perfect original condition worth. All upgrades performed. I've heard numbers from $25-35K.

If it were a unique color combination (say continenal orange/lobster (like mine)), I would hope it could fetch $35,000 from the right buyer, but silver/black and a targa, puts it at the low end of the high-end scale, in my opinion. I say closer to $25,000, but my opinion is worthless since I'm not considering buying it.

Be realistic, an SC is not, per se, an investment - so valuation has more to do with current mkt conditions than intrinsic collectability. Body type, mileage, MY & color are relevant, just as are physical / mechanical condition & history... like any old production 911. It isn't the only one in the world, probably not even the best.
So, if you REALLY want THAT car & have the $, then std procedure applies - consider all your alternatives, drive it, PPI it & negotiate ("hit 'em low & work 'em" - what's the asking price, anyway?). (To me) it is most critical to clearly determine one's own intent & expectation. If you want a number, start waving cash in the high teens - if you can't close, walk & keep hunting... patience is a strength, & $25k should buy lotsa nice 911s from '78-'89... even a silver Targa w/ less than 100k mi.

"would an SC be worth more?"
No.
"or did the buyer of the 88 get an incredible deal?"
Incredible? No... but if he's a happy 911 owner-driver in 1 yr, he got a good one.

If the SC looked like it came off the showroom floor and was 100% original...was original paint and had every document from day one including the purchase order for the car...and $6k was spent to properly sort the car...$25k easily. For every one of these types of cars, there are ten or more 3.2's, most in average or above average condition. The SC or Super Carrera was a great, lightweight car and the collector market is now just waking up to that fact.

Richard's known for having very nice examples... & not underpricing them.

For even more comparison, here's an even lower mile Carrera Targa at Sloan-still not at $35K:
