Default 87 Carrera ODO ooops. info needed.

My 1987 Odometer gave up last night. Oops. Speedo works fine. This car is my daily driver and I love it. but I need the odo.

I read the posts in this forum and it sounds like it could be:
a sending unit under plate behind seats or
broken gear and needs to go off to be fixed.

spedometer.com in Austin, TX sounded like the place to send it if that is what needs to happen.

Do you guys have any advice about testing the unit so I can confirm which route to go
1. replace sending unit
2. repair Odo/Speedo

thanks

When this happened to me a couple of years ago I used speedometer.com. They were very helpful, but I am basically local. North Holltwood seems to be the gold standard. Is there a great difference in price?

I’m no expert, but it seems to me that if only the odo has failed, it is the drive gear in the gauge. Is the speedometer still working?

Also, several people have replaced the gear on a do it yourself basis.

I second Mr. Bray's reccomendation on North Hollywood Speedometer. The sending unit would also affect the speed output. Mine failed a while back on an '87. NHS had a quick turn-around, cleaned up the dial and lens and answered all questions. Real good folks to do business with. Mark

I have had 100% satisfaction with North Hollywood. They have done such good work for me.

I agree with others that its the odo gears that are broke. Common issue. I sent my speedo to a vender in TX to save a few bucks. After I got it back, it then had to be sent to North Hollywood Speedo to be fixed completely. So, I didn't save any money with the TX vendor.

yep, if the speedometer is working, you can be 100% sure it is not a sending unit issue, but is the gears internal in the speedo.

It's actually not very difficult to fix it yourself, if you are handy. Usually what it is is the gear that drives the odo is slipping on the shaft. It's not that hard to carefully remove the bezel and glass, pull the "guts" out, and use a drop of superglue on the gear and shaft.

I think there are some DIY instructions on the internet, or the bird board, try a search if you are interested.

When working on a odometer are you required to be a certified facility? When I had my gear replaced due to the same issue years ago that was a standard requirement, although this may be a state requirement rather than federal.

I thought the replacement gears were available aftermarket, maybe through Performance Products?

A good time for the reminder: DO NOT reset your odometer while underway. This seems to be the cause of many a failure. Do it while you're sitting at the gas pump.

DIY. Here's the place to get it:

edit: Jeff at http://www.odometergears.com/porsche.html is the place I meant. No affiliation with either, but Jeff is a good one.
