Post battery vent tube?

The new battery I installed ('87 911) came w/ a tube for the vent, and instructions for venting some BMW models but not the 911. Can anyone tell me if there should be a tube to route the vented gases/ acid out of the trunk of the car?

The vent from the battery that had been in the car was not attached to a tube and I cant find anything tube-like to attach to the new battery vent orifice (apprently it just vented into the trunk space??).

Should there be a vent tube out of the trunk, and if so what route does it take?

TIA,

Dan

Not sure about earlier cars, but my 964 has got a vent tube, but my battery has not!
