Default thoughts on this 74 911 - MEXICO BLUE

I'm going to look at this car this weekend. It is a 74 911. The decklid badge says it is a 74 911S. I thought the S was only availble in the US from 75 and later. If it is an S what is the advantage if any?

15,000 orig. miles. Stored in an airport hanger the last 11 years. the motor was just re-sealed (so I'm told) and the car made road worthy. It needs tires and the sound pad replaced. Looks like it has oil fed tensioners. Can you guys spot anything else wrong or out of place?

Of course I will do a PPI prior to purchase. What are your thoughts on it value as well. Thanks.

Porsche made a "normal" 911 and an "S" version in '74. After that, they were all denoted 911S from '75 until '77.

The picture of that '74 shows some inconsistencies with the engine since the '74 cars didn't have air pumps nor engine compartment fans for cabin heat. I also see the air cleaner cover facing the wrong way and an American oil filter in place (a real no-no!).

I'd be asking some questions,......

Even the CA emmissions cars didn't have air pumps in 74?

It also has the big bumperettes on the back from 75 and later cars.

It is a 1975. I just went and looked at it. VIN is 9115202234. The engine is correct for the car.

Condition is amazing. It has the pop off valve, oil fed tesioners, 15" fuchs, Passenger front oil cooler, 11 blade fan, tools, even the orig. brochures, manuals and all the books. Tools, airpump and jack are there too. Rear stabilizer and red Koni shocks. Didn't check for LSD. The clock and radio works and there are ZERO cracks in the dash. It even comes with a second radio. One has a cassett, the other doesn't.

I can't tell if it has been repainted or not. The ad says it has been 100% repainted. But the people selling the car are doing it as a favor for the owner who lives out of state. There are no paint lines or overspray at all. But I'm certainly not an expert. If it was repainted all the glass was taken out and so was just about everything else. But none of the screws or fitment show sings of ever being touched. No paint drips either.

I saw one oil leak from an oil line (just a drip), the tires are shot, the Koni's sound like they need replaced and the steering wheel has a lot of play in it. I've read about some sort of gasket breaking on these and this one is certainly broke.

Other than that it presents just like a 15,000K car from 1975. No chips, scratches, dents. fired right up too. No smoke and zero hesitation. Better than my Honda. I'll be taking it for a ppi tomorrow.

Any thoughts on price?

As a 75, does it still have the "thermal reactos"? If so, get rid of them. PO may have a long time ago. Good luck.

I have no idea what the reactors look like, but it has the 11 blade fan, front fender oil cooler, tensioners and pop off valve so I would assume they are gone.

However, I found the one flaw in the paint that indicates it has been repainted. There is no VIN sticker in the drivers door jamb. This would indicate a full glass out respary with new rubber and everything as there are no other signs of paintwork.

Your thoughts on what this does to the value are appreciated. The paint work looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. The car just needs a full detail.

I do not understand how a car that only has 15k on it was in need of a repaint....a car like that should be new. It looks good in the pictures...but is there more documentation? Can someone testify this has been sitting for 11 years...where is further milage docs? Maybe this car has been driven 215k repainted and you are told it sat for years to give the impression it only has 15k. Some things looks good...but other things does not add up. A repeaint on a car with 15k...why? Did it have the original tires? Why is someone selling for someone else...can you talk to the original owners? Sounds like its great if its true...or something fishy?

Looks like a lot of wear on the driver side seat bolster for only 15K miles. Carfax & PPI highly recommended before going further.

Carfax on a car of this age is virtually worthless. There is a very minimal wear on the outside edge of the bolster. Who knows about the paint. If it's in Vegas and has been sitting outside or in the elements for 11 years, it may have needed it. Having said that, I would imagine the dash needing replacing if that were the case. Sitting for 11 years with no care, is worse than driving it all of the time and taking proper care of it.

Bottom line, the car could be worth as low as 8 or 9 and as much as 20 or more with those miles if ppi checked out. Too little info still.

Well,

I've owned 5 911's in the past including a 40K miles 911SC. This car is nicer inside and out. I believe the mileage is true. When you look at the clamps, the trailing arms, the nuts and bolts holding everything together you'd see the mileage to be true. The skids on the front have little wear and are not bent over, the drain gaskets for the front trunk under the car are still in place, even the sleeve for the manual antenna doesn't have a spec of dirt on it. The condition is amazing

I just left my local indy shop. We put together an estimate of everything we felt the car needs. Time to go and make a deal. I'll keep you posted.

I'd come to agreement on price BEFORE I forked out for a PPI.

Just to correct a previous post, there was a third model 911 in '74, the Carrera. A Carrera was also sold in 1975 as the second model to the 911S.
