It melted everything. Anything that could be consumed in the engine compartment - was.

Guys I think you are missing it . This is not at all about carying a fire extringuisher. As Glen stated he had one and look at his car. This is about spending the money and making sure our older cars have fuel systems that are fully up to snuff and any old components are replaced before this happens.
We should all benefit from Glenns poor misfortune and use this as a wake up call to look at our own fuel delivery systems ... not run out and buy extinguishers.

Carrera owners should pay particular atention.

There's no substitute for making the effort to ensure that things like the fuel system are up to snuff. I wasn't trying to imply that adding an extinguisher was any sort of magical solution to a situation like Glenn's, just a relatively inexpensive way to give myself a last line of defense should a minor fire break out.

you should have taken your roof off .... and let the insurance company take the car away .. even after your setlement you can still sell your roof for a substantial sum of money ... sorry but the car is an obvious write off .... Our cars of that era are getting so few it pains me to see another one go ...

Where were you when it went up ?

Real sorry to see this Glenn, though the important thing of course is that you got out without incident.

Hopefully the insurance settlement is fair.

Ice, I will do a search, but aside from the rubber (I think) fuel lines running through the tunnel is there anything specific to Carreras that you're referring to?

Good luck Glenn.

"i have never had a bad day...some are just better than others"...you made it out of there safe, the car can be replaced...you could have been in Haiti...the fire pales in comparison at least you can start over...that is a blessing

First off, glad to hear you got out ok. Second, I'm sorry about the car. Horrible thing to happen. It's sad to see such a beautiful car like that.

Dave One Canadian Porsche fire is enough .. Carreras have a couple of fuel lines that are prone to fail . A main one and a smaller one that is allmost impossible to get to with the engine in , so some people leave them , and once they repture that's it ... a few people here have changed them . If you don't find anything under search , which is improbable I know for sure ian ( Imcarthur) has changed them and he is in T.O. a local guy .. so search him out. I think Doug did his too.

Obviously, it isn't just a Carrera thing. But the two high pressure lines are probably candidates for replacement on most of the '84-89's. You can replace them with the motor in the car, but the intake has to come up. As with many repairs, a few hours spent dropping an engine may take less overall time in the long run.

That's a good point ed . I don't think the CIS cars run the same pressure or have the aditional smaller line ... proofs in the pudding however .. Glenns car was 3 or 4 I believe
