They did a beautiful job and spent $$$. RW HP turned out to be around 243 I think. Looks like a fun build but the HP/$$ ratio favors a 3.6 964 or 993 motor conversion.
That's Ralph's 3.5 build - excellent engine.

Here's a response from Steve Wong when I sent him the dynojet numbers from my 3.4 so he could fine tune a chip

The data show the ambient temp was 81 degrees, 7% humidity, and barometric pressure at 30.27 in-hg. SAE correction is 0.97. SAE Corrected value is 244 rwhp at appx 6300 rpm at an AFR of 13.0-13.1. That's Ralph's 3.5 territory. Must be that 93 octane gas out there. With a little fuel tweaking, we can extract a couple extra hp in the 5000-6000 range.

For comparison, here's Jeremy's 3.4, in blue, compared to Ralph's 3.5, in red, compared to a bone stock 88 3.2 with a euro premuffler and stock chip, in green.

I think Ed will like the 3.4 - and he's a little lighter than my car too.

Good luck with the build Ed, looking forward to your results! I went 3.4 on mine with 10.3:1 98mm Mahles, DC20 cams with final CR cc'd at 10.45:1. Makes a great street engine and has no problems hitting the redline - lightweight clutch housing just adds to the flexibility.

LNEngineering do some slip-fit 100mm Nickies, though don't know anyone who has fitted these.

All the best

The thing about a conversion is the unknown. I've heard of two recently where the used transplant motors offered up some surprises to the new owners, resulting in expensive rebuilds on top of the already significant rebuild costs.

I think a Varioram motor conversion sounds like fun. Fun to buy from someone who has already done one that is.

If you're interested, here are some great engine rebuild threads on impactbumpers.com. The first link is a project thread, the engine rebuild starts the end of page 26. You'll want to skim over all of the small talk in-between but it's an excellent thread.

This second thread is an excellent engine rebuild done on a 3.2. (With lots of pics!)

Enjoy!

I would hesitate before going the 3.6 conversion route. I think you would lose a bit of the drivability. The 3.6 makes great torque but won't quit have the song your motor will. That means something to me. Furthermore, there have been concerns about the 3.6, certainly in early cars, not having a stiff enough chassis for the gobs of torque - Ruby is a targa. Your car is by no means a Frankenstein car and now would be a bad time to start down that road. You have developed the car too far to start hacking. Thats my .02.

Ed,
I have a SC (with a freshly rebuilt engine!) that may have a bad exhaust valve from an exhaust leak. Compression test tomorrow.
If I have to tear down down the engine that far, I'd like to take the opportunity to go to larger P&C, and perhaps 964 cams. Is this reasonable for a 3.0? How big can I go without having to do major modifications or megabucks?

I'd love to read thru these articles, but I can't seem to find a link to part 1 of that series, just parts 2 thru 5...anyone know where a link is to the first article?

Any set of pistons and cylinders is probably going to cost you $4000 minimum if you go outside of stock. There are guys that have build 3.2L short stroke motors out of 3.0's, I think it is a somewhat popular build. Keep in mind that the pistons are not those off of a 3.2L Carrera motor-wrist pin size and placement is not the same. You probably need to start a new thread on the subject or call Steve Weiner as he knows more in his little finger that I know in total.

Go to Pelican and search using "Ralph" and "3.5L". He posted up more info on his build on Pelican than he was able to put in the magazine articles.

Shirish: Good on you-getting a writeup! My engine will be very similar to yours, I hope I can crack the 270's-hopefully the upper 270's- in HP once I get some tuning done. Thanks for posting!

Very welcome Ed!

On a different chassis dyno recently i hit 273 at 6025rpm and 245 ftlbs at 5098 running on 5/40 300V Motul.
