This car popped up for sale locally and I would like your opinions on the car. Have at it:

check out fine on a ppi? I too am looking for a 1987-1989 911 and most of the
ones I've seen that are in good shape have this many, or more miles on them
and their asking prices are anywhere from 21 to 25K$ here in Northern California.

Everett,
I'm just a casual looker now, but I bought a car earlier this year. There are many others here that are better informed than I, but my experience was as follows.
Asking price of $30k - '89 RoW, with 69k mi on the clock, Big Reds (total overkill but I love em), SSIs, Dansk 2in1out and 17" wheels. I took it home for 25k, which is still pretty high, IMO, even though it's not a run of the mill car. I emailed the seller with my offer - he sat on it for a week before agreeing.
I'd say that that a seller asking 21-25k is trying to sell for anything north of 20. Offer 19k cash and negotiate from there - and be patient. Remember that 993s are getting down into the mid 20's.
Again, just my experience and opinion. More important than price is finding the car that is exactly what you want.

+1 Derrick B. There are lots of P car choices out there in that price range. Myself, I have a hard time evaluating cars. There are factors that, sight-unseen can creep up. As well, there can be regional differences in price. A good PPI is the best money you will spend. Keep in mind that asking the shop who does the PPI what the car is worth is uncomfortable for them. Their answer is not always accurate as they don't keep their eye on the market daily, and their answer is bound to hurt somebody's feelings - buyer or seller.
Sweet looking car though.

I'm not a big fan of that interior color. If the PPI checks out and the guy has records all the way back to new that price may be a good starting point.

Very nice looking car, almost identical to the one I recently purchased (my interior is Champagne leather/Marina Blue belt line). I agree that the asking price is pretty high. Mine had about 6K more miles on it when I bought it, but it had brand new Bilstein HDs and Yokohama Advans all around, and a recent, documented rebuild of the G-50 gearbox. Asking price was significantly lower.

Nice looking car. Great color. What I can see of the interior color looks OK to me (can't tell if it's black or dark blue but I'd prefer black). The car has been lowered and that would be fine with me. As others have said, get a PPI and include compression and leakdown tests. If the car looks like it's been garaged it's entire life, that's a plus. If not, that's a negative. Ask if it has a LSD. It's worth more with than w/o. Ask when/if the clutch was replaced. Test the syncros when you drive the car. And ask if the brake fluid was regularly changed. And read Mr. Zimmerman's book.
If it all checks out, my guess is the car will sell in the high teens.

Asking price is one thing.....if I had a nice sub-100K Carrera I was trying to sell, and confident in its condition, I'd probably ask a similar price. It comes down to how motivated the seller is.

Well I have to wait until sunday to go and look at the car as the seller is going out of town. The car has been for sale for 3 or 4 months now. The ad is only posted at a local Indy shop so I don't think he is that motivated to sell.
I'll keep you all posted.
