True HID conversions will not work with the fluted lenses presently on the car. I think you will be disappointed without a LOT of work and money. The search feature may explain this more, and a Google search will quickly reveal the shortcomings of the HID kits.

"..True HID conversions..."

I suspect that means the new projector type HID conversions will not work as you need a clear lens for those to work well. The new aftermarket bi-xenon-hi/lo bulbs seem to work just fine. Just be careful, if you need the 9004 bulb type, side to side high/low filament arrangement, be sure you get the "tilt" type bulbs not the telescoping ones.

Biggest problem is finding a location, nearby location, for the HID ballasts.

I have an HID flashlight that uses the new 12v HID bulbs with the built-in ballasts. They are totally compact and will fit in the headlight bucket if someone were to design the reflector and headlight lens for it. I think the bulb is made in Germany and is the same one used in the new BMWs. It is extremely bright but does not seem anywhere near as hot as a halogen.

You may have already done this, but have you checked the headlight alignment to see if it's within the factory specifications. I upgraded my bulbs to higher output versions and had very little improvement. Once I had the headlights aligned at a local Porsche shop, and with the PIAA Superwhites its almost perfect.

I have been installing HIDs in cars for about 8 years. HIDs were designed to work in projector headlights but todays systems work very well in standard halogen housings. I install about 6 sets a week and I have yet had a customer say he didn"t get more light with the HID sets. I have had them in my 911 for about 7 yrs and I am still on the original set. My lighting is wonderfull and besides the extra light I get, they also look wonderfull. The light is deffinetly more scattered but still beams very nice.
I use a special kit I have been using for 2 yrs now. They are digital mini 50 w output balast.
They do not require relays. They only need 7 amps to turn on and 5 amp to stay on after that.
They will go into the housing with very little modification.. They also make a hi/low kit. Like wwest said you do not want the dual bulb filiments, inbetween hi and low they shut off for a mili second.
The ones I carry have a little actuator in the bulb and moves the bulb to change the reflection to hi beam and they work assume.
I am not on here to sell them only to give my opinion on the subject. Remember on this forum you will get all kinds of answers good and bad. Some guys like fat chicks, some like them skinny. We all
have some many opinion. John

Search for a set of H1's. They will do fine at night. Be prepared to search and spend $, however.

I got my car with the upgraded h4 housings. Once you have them all you do is put in the HID specific H4 bulb and mount the balist . Run your power and ground to the original bulb socket and all done.
