Default Question About Brake In Period

Just purchased a new 2009 Carrera S Cab 6 speed. The owners manual says that the car should not be driven over 4200 rpms for the first 2000 miles. does this make sense? I have never heard of a 2000 mile brake in period. Since this is my first Porsche since 1977, I would love to get more info on this.

Follow the Owner's Manual instructions to-the-tee. I did.

My only other recommendation is to do an early oil change at the 1,000 mile mark.

Congrats on the new car!

Congratulations on the new car. Welcome to RL.
FWIW, that break in period is similar to most modern Porsche (including the Cayenne) recommendations.

You may want to post this in the 997 (wet) forum...

Follow maufacturers recommendation, however, I agree with No Htwo o on doing an oil change at 1,000.

We don't know anything about breaking in a new car in this section...
...you might try the 997 they are more knowledgable about cars with radiators than us.

I just rebuilt my engine ground up. I know its not the same engine (i have a 3.5l engine based on a 3.2 carrera) Here's what I did:

- mineral oil for first 500 miles;
- flushed the oil and refilled with mineral;
- 4,000 rpm for first 500 miles
- 5,000 rpm limit to 1,000 miles
- refill with synthetic and peddle to the metal after that

On a new water cooled motor (I just broke in a 2008 M96 motor), you certainly don't want to run mineral oil in it on a fresh motor right from Porsche with factory fill in it. I'm not suggesting Pete above wants you to do that, but it's the internet and people will believe everything that's typed sometimes.

Just keep it under 4200 rpms and don't use full throttle until you've passed 2,000 miles. As No HTwo O mentions, read the owner's manual carefully. Everything you need to know about the break in period is in the manual.

Don't ask about break in periods on the 997 forum. Search for the info first and if need be resurrect the thread.

Very touchy subject over there.
