Default Can I locate a car I sold?

Greetings!

Anyone know how I can find the current owner of a car I used to have? From CarFax, I know it was purchased in Huntington Beach, CA in July 2008.

Here's why. I sold the car May 2008 to someone pretending to be an individual buyer. Later, I learned it was a car broker. Needless to say, the person didn't care much about the history and personal aspects of the car. They sold it to a classic car company in Newport Beach, CA. I guess the current owner bought it from them.

I would simply like to introduce myself to the new owner and offer to answer any questions about the car's history. I also have quite a few personal records on the car.

Thanks!

Do you know any cops? Run the VIN, Shazam! Buy the way, you must have sold it cheap for the buyer to flip it to a wholeseller, ouch . . . But, if I were the new owner, I would love to meet you and share stories about the car and aquire any paperwork. PM me, I do some LE work

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I don't know any cops. Other thoughts?

I think I sold the car for a fair price. But, I believe the broker thought it was more in concours condition. That lead to a screaming match (at least on his side) and almost a legal battle. It was a crummy end to the ownership of a terrific car, which started with Rennlist and people like you guiding me on how to find a great car.

I'm like you. If I were buying the car, I would want to talk to prior owners (and I did) :-)

Yes, he saw pictures but never looked at the car; never did a PPI, nothing. Very weird.

My lesson learned and suggestion to all is: do a google search on your buyer. When I did (after the fact) it was clear he was a broker selling cars. Interesting this ties with the tag line at the bottom of your signature, but I wasn't very smart and didn't know how to google :-)

It's pretty difficult to get that info here in Cal. There are privacy laws in place to protect individuals (Stalking, Ex's,etc) in Cal. Unless you are an attorney or have a right to request the info to lien sale a car, it is unlikely...

You might want to check the Cal DMV site for info.

Post the VIN here, if they are Porsche enthusiasts, they will eventually find their way here and find you.

If they are not P-enthusiasts, they probably won't value your insights all that much any way.

FWIW, if a previous owner of my car tried to track me down, I'd probably think he was trying to reclaim the stash of illegal substances he'd hidden in the car. I would want it out (to reduce the weight of course) but I'm not sure I would let them near my car

It is a privacy law thing for sure. If you know someone at dmv you could get the info...if not its a hard thing to trace without "inside" contacts; ie police etc.

On the chance the current owner might see it (or someone that might know them):
VIN WP0AB0910JS120459

It's a Diamond Blue, '88, 911 with custom (bone) interior, probably in Huntington Beach, CA somewhere. One of it's unique distinguishing features was a custom order without the rear "Carerra" emblem.

If you go to CA.gov dept of consumer affairs bureau of automotive repair eventualy you can find the site where you can plug in the vin and see if it was smog tested. I did that on your car...and unless I confused an "O" with "0" nothing came up. Maybe the car has not been tested yet....but at least by doing that you know that the car is in fact in California.

Here's the info that came up on this site. It was last tested at Newport Smog in Costa Mesa, Ca. on 8/21/09. I think it was "0" instead of "O"
