Re. Nice 87 Targa on Pelican

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-13-999-a.html

I emailed that guy a couple weeks ago. He has no service records and no ownership history. I notice he has had several other cars for sale on Pelican and on craigslist los angeles. Anyone know him or bought a car from him?

One more question: any downside to a 77 with a 3.2 engine for a driver?

OK, in case anyone is keeping score, I'm going to pass on these two for now. I've been looking around on autotrader and craigslist outside of california just to get a better idea. You guys are right---there seems to be a lot more out there for the money. I'll keep on it.

Meanwhile, I need to read around and try to find some opinions on which is the superior 80s car, the SC or the Carrera...

What about something like this? 54k miles? Again, how is this possible? Has it been driven enough? Rollback?

I've seen enough low mileage cars during my time with Porsche to know that there are some owners who don't put many miles on these cars. I have a '90 with 34,000 miles on it. I put 198 miles on the car this past driving season, so it does happen that cars can not get much use.

However, if the car is taken out on a regular basis, warmed up completely, taken to red line here and there, maintained correctly and put away correctly, these things can last for decades.

This car's worn passenger seat is interesting... I'd think at 54k miles, the seats would have faired a little better, but it could be a short mileage trip car too where there is a lot of getting in and out and the car is driven only a few miles. I think you need at least 15 to 20 miles per trip to get a 911 up to operating temperature.

If your budget can't handle $5,000 to $10,000 repairs, I'd stay away from those high mileage cars (as you have indicated you will do). These are old, expensive sports cars and cars with a lot of use and/or abuse without the appropriate maintenance are expensive to get right. You can spend $10k on a 911 on fixing various issues on some of these $12,000 cars and you'll still have another $10k to spend to get the car back to a factory condition.

Good Luck,

Jay

I keep meticulous records, and I'm betting most everyone on here does. Hell, I keep meticulous records on my college-student son's Honda Civic. IMHO, lack of records equals probable dishonesty.

There are enough good cars out there, even with over 100,000 miles on the odometers, that you don't need to buy one with a murky history including a repainted door no one remembers. Is there a Car Fax report on these autos?

Good point, Genes. BTW, no carfax for #1. #2 had a clean carfax, showing only registration renewals and smogs. No accidents etc...
