I mean I'm not ready for a 356!
I mentioned I had spoken to the shop that had done work on #2. They said they had fixed the leak when the replaced an oil return tube. I then emailed the owner and asked if he had sourced the leak, and he replied that he had forgotten that the shop had fixed it. Maybe we'll see, but there could very well be no leak. (BTW, I didn't see a leak---it's just that the underside of the motor had a bunch of dirt stuck to "dried" oil.) Anyway...
Here are some pics of #1:
and # 2:

Whoever painted #1 didn't research proper placement of the engine lid badge, it's too high. Why would somebody paint a car, then sell it? Accident?
#2 has late model seats (SCs didn't have power seats). Are they actually wired so that they work? Invoice for them?

Wow, good eyes. I never would hav enoticed. They painted it in 05 at a local body shop chain with 4 locations in northern California. Looked like it needed a good rubbing. Why, indeed.
I'll ask the #2 guy about the receipt for the seats. The driver side is wired. I stalked him on another forum and read his posts, including the posts about buying the seats and giving away the originals. Is it important that he have the receipt, or is it a matter of full disclosure?
I think there is some kind of skin over the dash. It's well done, but I don't know if it's real.
Here's more detail from the classified. By the way, you guys are great. I'm learning a lot.
- 21/26 mm F/R torsion bars
- Carrera sway bars
- Elephant Racing Polybronze Spring Plate bushings
- Strut tower brace
- Carrera front brakes
- Drilled rotors all four corners
- Steel Braided brake lines
- Ride Height set, wheels aligned, and corner balanced by Brandon at Roger Kraus Racing in Castro Valley
- Numbered oil temp guage
- Carrera front oil cooler with fan
- Carrera cam chain tensioners
- air box pop-off valve
- Targa top reskinned
- upgraded seats from a 88 Carrera; 6-way power driver's side. Supple leather, no rips.
- Turbo valve covers
- GHL Muffler
- Euro tail light lenses
- Polished and recently painted (with Wurth's satin black) 6" and 7" fuchs
- Turbo tie rods
- Carrera short shift kit
- New WUR
- New Motor mounts and sound pad
New stuff a couple years ago:
- H4 headlamps
- fuel pump
- external oil thermostat
- on-engine oil thermostat
- Aluminum pressure plate
- Clutch disk
- Transmission custom rebuilt by Rob at SCARGO
- All trans linkage bushings and coupler replaced
- Bilstien sport shocks
- Catalytic converter
- Rebuilt starter

There was no mention of sport seats, but I believe the seats are what came with the car. They were recovered at a local upholstery shop. (Owners have the receipts.)

Three Wheelin'
More and more, #2 appears the one to have. The paint scares me as well. Also, the original trunk must have been crashed, trashed or removed from the car, or something so that the paint shop didn't have it to replicate the location of the badge, or it was their first P car to ever paint??

FYI: Baby, the SC badge can't be put on wrong, it's fitted through holes in the lid.

The badge for 911 SC looks about the same mounting height
as the Carrera. Perhaps the paint shop was using an SC for comparison?
From the descriptions and amount of upgrades made, I like #2. The photos for #2 are also more attractive. It sure sounds like that is the one you prefer as well. I would trust your gut feelings.
From being around Rennlist for a few years, posters have claimed that the SC motors are very durable and last in excess of 200K miles.
Good luck.

Found the SC on Pelican

How warped is the dash?
Seems like he might have issues with engine wear
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ml#post4345632
Had issues with the engine running hot
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...eally-hot.html
IMHO I would look at other examples with much lower mileage

Dash looks perfect. I read all of the owner's posts before inwent to see the car. Because of the heat issue, he put the front oil cooler on. Turned out the culprit was a sensor (I forget which one he said). As for the top end, he says he adds a quart every 1k miles (how is that possible?) I wonder if maybe he senses it's time to let go before the motor does. On the other hand, the car ripped...

Quart every thousand miles seems high, then again, might be normal for the high mileage.
t's a gamble.
I add a 1/2 quart every 3000 miles.
Nice 87 Targa on Pelican

i am about a quart every 5,000km ( 3,000 miles ) . I know this for sure because I always fill to the mid mark on my dipstick and in 5,000km when it is time to change it i am down to the add mark. This works out perfect as then it will all fit in my oil container
PS my SC script is glued on and there are no holes in the back of the lid . It also looks like the sticky back of the SC badge looks factory , not like someone cut off posts and glued it on . hm.... John is yours glued on too ?

1. All SC badges were applied through holes drilled in the lid. Anything else is due to lid replacement. For example, my '82 badge is glued on, only because I added a Carrera tail and decided that two-sided sticky tape was a lot easier than making a template to drill the holes!
2. 1,000 miles/quart is a wonderful, and perfectly normal, consumption rate. I had customers who went the entire 5,000 miles between services, without adding oil, but that's the exception, not the rule. SC valve guides don't wear like Carrera guides do, hence they don't have the same consumption issues.
3. When the PPI is done on #2, and the lower rocker covers are off to check the head studs, the technician should also examine the lobes of the camshafts for pitting. My SC needed cams at 192K miles (I installed o.e. units and Carrera Tensioners at that time); I'm now at 204K miles, still use 1 quart/1,000 miles, and passing the bi-annual smog test is a breeze.
