Post 911 mechanic baffled, same problem?

I recently had clutch replaced on my '76 911S
2.7 CIS. My mechanic noticed that the vacuum line on the distributer was disconnected.
After reconnecting, the car's timing was off.
I bought and installed a new distributer cap
and new OEM Ignition Wires w/o the insulators. My mechanic set the points. After installation,
the car started dying in gear occasionally. After stalling, the car would not start for a
few minutes. The process is often repeated
soon after getting going. I took the car back
to the mechanic who checked to see that the fuel injection system was functioning properly.
I replaced my cracked intake boot and air intake box straps. The car runs great and sounds great, better than ever since I've owned the car.
The CD unit is also less than 2 yrs old. The car has been back several times, with no luck.

Any suggestions as to why this car stalls,
and what I should do would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

What is your mechanic's vac. gauge reading at idle?

the hose was for the vacuum retard unit on the distributor. attached, it retards timing at idle, which also slows down the idle. it's for emission purposes. most folks leave it off and plug it. if you have to have it attached, reset the timing to the factory spec, reset the idle speed to 950-100, and make sure the CO is 3-3.5%. usually that keeps it from dying. the deceleration valve may also need to be adjusted so the engine comes back to idle slower.
