Post 3.2 Carrera vs. 3.0 SC

I have read a lot about how some consider early SC's to be some of the finest early 911's. I guess I haven't seen much rehtoric on the '84-85 Carreras. I figured that they must have gotten better. the chain tensioners and pop-off stuff is obviously included. The transmissions are the same, and the 3.2's obviously have more power. Is there a downside to an '84-85? The prices seem to be pretty close for a nice SC or Carrera, and are in my budget What are your opinions of the two?

Brent,

The SC reputation is based on the entire run, not just the early years. I might suggest the 80-83's are a bit more desireable, as they have the lambda O2 sensors, which simplified the engine management a wee bit.

In terms of the pre-G50 84-86's, there's alot to recommend them, and you hit on some of the obvious points. Another consideration is that the 3.2L and later DME engines don't touch the gas as much as a CIS-based engine. This may be important as gasoline with ethanol is put into broader circulation, as ethanol bonds with any water in the system and moves it through the fuel system. Both Alan Caldwell and Bruce Anderson have discussed this in PCA publications.

Plus, you can 'chip' the 3.2L engine for an easy performance tweak.

Talking

I think the SC guys are more vocal due to their huge inferiority complex.....JUST KIDDING! The Carrera models are fine cars, and showed improvement to the earlier 911s, in my estimation. I get 21mpg religiously with my stock 3.2, and that is with my "foot in it" much of the time. I bought an '84 in July, and have put over 2000 miles in my spare time on her, and it's a great car!
