Default 1984-1989 911 interior room

Hello all,

I am considering the purchase of a 1984-1989 911 targa or convertible.

Can anyone tell me if the car can accommodate a 6'4" driver? I owned
a 1974 914 years ago and found it to be one of the few sports cars that I could
comfortably sit in and drive. I've not yet found a late 80s 911 to sit in and drive!

Thanks for your help.

Everett

You are looking at the right car. All kinds of room... The seats goes way back and you can always put a spacer on the wheel.

Only Sweden and the Netherlands surpass Germany for average human height.

Hi Everett, Im 6'1" and my dad is 6'4". Both of us have no issues at all in my 911. It's an 84 cab. Lots of room, should have no problem. GO FOR IT!!! Ed.

When the new seat generation was introduced in 1985, Porsche raised the seat height for that year. In 1986, they seemed to sort it out and lowered it back down. 911s are generally OK for tallish folk, but watch out for '85s.

I am 6'3" and 36" pant inseam. I have had my 85 Targa for 20 yrs. the stock steering wheel causes a close fit between knee and floor console, but I lived with that for almost 10 yrs. regarding seat height on an 85. I had drivers pwr seat and tended to set it on the high side, lowered back side and reclined a bit for my long arms. not sure how a sunroof coupe head room may differ from my Targa but can suspect a little less.

once I started going to track events, smaller MOMO wheel, followed by steering wheel spacer, and now full cage and EVO2 seats. still comfortable.

Sometimes I wish I had your problem. In my 87 911, I had to add blocks on my pedals, elevation kit on the seat, deep dish steering wheel... and I sit on a cushing in my race seats at the track!

Yeah, the 911 has a lot of room in it.

I just bought a Miata for the track. I think I'm closer to the Japanese in stature than the Germans.

Have fun searching for your Porsche. You're gonna love it. Iceman has a good point, get a proper 911 (i.e. Targa or Cabriolet) and you won't have to worry how tall you are

Thanks for all the insights gang! I test drove a beautifully maintained 1988 Taga today and regretably
I didn't fit too well! I was able to drive it but the steering wheel didn't allow my legs to come together.
From what I see here, maybe a smaller 320mm steering wheel with a spacer to bring it out a bit would work? Any thoughts?

6'2" with 35" on the inseam. I actually move my seat up a notch for at the track.

Momo makes a good spacer that puts wheel closer to driver and raises it up off the knees/thighs.

My 928 is the only car I've ever driven with more leg room.

6'3 3/4", 34" inseam, '88 coupe, seat not all the way up, not very tilted back. Plenty of room, no sense of being cramped.

For one more data point, I'm 6'4" tall and I fit very well in my '87 Carrera. Lots of leg and head room. The car does have a Momo wheel and a raised hub so that may be contributing to the leg room I have.
