After Dashboard Change - Rough Idle/Won't Stay Running
After changing out the dashboard in my '82 911SC, the car won't stay started. It idles very rough and applying any gas causes it to stall. After about 10-20 seconds, it stalls by itself. I tried to start it about 4 times. I normally starts very easily.
Are there any wires or connectors attached to the gauges that might cause this problem? I last had a similar problem when the relay under the passenger seat had failed about 6 years ago. It is firmly connected, but I haven't checked it out.
The car was only sitting for about a week, and nothing in the engine compartment was touched. I just removed the wheel, and pulled out the gauges (leaving them connected) to unbolt the dash. Under the hood, I removed the firewall cover, and disconnected the heater hoses to reach the bolts by the glove compartment.
I normally drive it 1-2 times/week. The car is garaged, and the weather has been in the 60's-70's in Southern CA.
Your thoughts and diagnostic suggestions are appreciated. Is this a coincidence, or did I detach something?

MR Scott - Eureka - Clock/Dome/Freq Valve Fuse Blown!!
Though midnight, I ran out to the car and verified that the fuse was indeed blown. I put in a new fuse and started the car. It ran great.
I must have grounded the circuit when working with the glove compartment light. I was wondering why it didn't work. I didn't notice that the clock had stopped, and I often have the dome lights off.
Thanks again. Great advice.

Glad I could help. I made the same mistake with the same symptoms, except I'd shorted the clock connection.
Best advice is to disconnect the battery before any electrical work, especially since not all circuits are fused (e.g. dash lights)
And since I didn't mention it in my first post, relatively new owner here, great site you all have here.

Impolite of me not to now that I've hijacked rt61's thread
A few months ago I picked up my first 911, an '80 sc. Pics are courtesy of the PO; paint ain't as pretty as it looks but decent for the 100K miles.
The blue leather is growing on me...
Nice to meet you all,
Adriano

Extremely nice. Euro (ROW) car looks like. I really like the smaller euro bumperettes. Wish I could score a set for my 79 Targa. I love the Blue interior too. Makes for a very mellow place to hang out.

Great car! White is the fastest color, but I'm sure you knew that.
I've yet to post a pic of mine as it has been in several states of disassembly recently. Once I get it cleaned up, I will post up a few.

Thanks all for the compliments; those pics were taken before the quarter-sized chip in the rear fender (before I bought it) and the bumper was gouged down to primer by some 'park by feel' NY-er. "Mellow", ha I like that. It's just so damn blue! I've considered that RS-style? charcoal carpet kit. Bigger things on the list first though like a full suspension refresh.
Car is actually not a euro version; the PPO apparently liked the euro look so he converted it. Ha, yes, white is of course fastest. And this car is Alpine which I've heard has a slight speed advantage over GP
I've been browsing these forums long enough to know you all have some pretty nice cars as well. I think the original poster (apologies again for the thread hijack) still owes us some pics...

When I first started looking for a 911 it had to be silver -- then I saw Hellblau, beautiful. Then I considered red -- doesn't suit me but it looks so darn good. Then those nice, distinctive browns... After finally driving one I couldn't think of a color I wouldn't like. Nice rosewood BTW iceman.
