Default Am I crazy?

I am a junior in college going to school in Connecticut...home is California. Right now I have a AWD 2003 silverado that is perfect for the winters here and a fun car. But I have been getting bored of it and looking to move on to something else and have looked at a lot of things but right now I really want to get into a 1970's 911. Would I be crazy to have my only car be a 911 in a CT winter? I have been looking at cars in the 13-20K range. Thanks for any help.
Cars I have found:
Long ways away but in the right price range: http://preferredautobrokers.net/inde...per&Itemid=115
Closer but a little more expensive: http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/...ml#more_photos

I can't stress the importance of a PPI (pre purchase inspection) by an independent mechanic.

The PO of mine was asking 10K, stellar 911 deal. I paid $350.00 for the PPI to find countless motor issues - including 3 broken headstuds - costing over 9K in repairs. Needless to say I paid less than 10K for the car after the findings

Wait til next spring...

The early Porsche driving "learning" experience is not something to begin lightly in any case and certainly not at this time, not at the onset, beginning of winter.

And also coming from a vehicle PERFECTLY adapted for winter use...

stick to a 944 till you graduate ... just my opinion ... cheaper, better balanced, save the 911 as a graduation present.

Are you crazy? Well, no... I mean you obviously have excellent taste in cars!

If it were me, I'd defer the P-car until school was done for a whole host of reasons. However, your question is really is your idea practical?

It can be, if you get the right car. You're looking at cars 25-35 years old and ANY car that old will likely need things. Even though Porsches are very well built, stuff just wears out. If you find a PROPERLY maintained car with a SOLID PPI result and buy it such that you are able to set aside a few grand for unexpected things, well, a 911 could very well be a fun DD. A lot will depend on how the particular car has been kept.

As far as models: I would focus on STOCK SCs or 3.2 Carreras (1978 to 1989). These cars are very reliable (again, if properly kept) and have the galvanized bodies that the earlier (pre-1976/1977) cars don't. As such, rust can be an issue. Rust can even be an issue in the galvanized cars if they were driven in sloppy salt and ice and not kept decently clean (especially in the nooks and crannies).

But as I said at the beginning, think long and hard about deferring this until school is done. At that point, you may be able to find a nice one that you can save for decent weather and keep the Silverado as a DD.

I have been very lucky and do my best not to take it for granted. It can all be gone in seconds. I think that I have decided to abandon the idea of getting a 911 for now. As much as I want it I think it is better to be practical. If I can make some money over the summer I will probably go after one next fall

Very Smart move , your education is already paying off ...

Just for laughs go over to the 944 forum and see how many hard luack cases there are of college guys buying 944s they can't aford to fix properly if at all.. nothing against the 944 , I had one and it is a great car , but it suffers from people buying them that can't aford the repair and maintanance..

I'm in my 4th year in college and am wrapping up a head stud replacement project on my SC. Between school, building my company, machining parts for professors and Porsche maintenance I am quite busy, but couldn't possibly be having more fun. In my opinion the SC is a good pick to learn about cars and engines. As long as you don't get tired of it, you'll have a fun time and will learn a lot. Like other guys have said, better not run out of money though...
