Default Going mid-engined....

....for a day. On 10/27, a small group of us have secured the services of one Patrick Long as a coach for a private DE at Motorsports Ranch near Ft. Worth. Actually, it is a two day event, but I can only spare the day to fly in and one of the DE days. I'm renting a Spec Boxster for the day, as Ruby will be about 1300 miles away. It was a little cheaper than renting a GT3 cup car at $350/session which probably would've got me into a bit of hot water with the wife.

We have a couple of other talented drivers that will be attending who will also help out on the coaching by doing some ride-alongs and offering up their wisdom.

We did this a couple of years ago, and it was great fun and I learned enough to drop 3 seconds off my lap time on the 1.7 course @ MSR. The unfortunate thing about that day, is that it is when I "twisted" my exhaust valves.

I'm pumped about the chance to work with Patrick again and to get to drive something new, not to mention a dedicated race car. It will also be somewhat of a homecoming for me as I've driven this track numerous times over 6 years.

That sounds like a good reason to go "11/10ths" in the name of Science.

Not a lot more than that for the entire day, less fuel.

Ed, are you just flying in that morning? Give me a ring and let me know when/where you will be. I'll make sure a few of us come out to MSR to watch.

I was going to ring you tomorrow-I get in at about noon on Monday, so I have some time that afternoon. We have a dinner/classroom session Monday nite. I fly out about 10pm Tuesday nite. We leave that Friday on vacation, lots of flying that week.

Great fun. Goin' mid-engine. I have done a number of track days in a couple of 914, and a couple of Boxsters. The biggest thing to remember is they feel great up to the point of traction loss. When they do let go, they will spin wildly in no particular direction - unpredictable beyond the limits. Often criss crossing the track so be careful in that regard. Keep us posted. Take your glove-box door or some other component from Ruby and get Patric to sign it. I feel this adds provenance to cars in the future.
Have fun and be careful.

I actually have Patricks signature on my engine lid from the last one. The glovebox door isn't a bad idea though.

And you're correct-when they go it's like a skater spinning with the mass in the center.

Low polar moment of inertia. It spins like a top.
