Considering the repair bill you would most likely face and the way 996 prices have fallen you might be better off looking for one of them. For the same net cost you might even end up with some warranty left over and a dependable ride

Apparently, it worked out very well as the vehicle was very clean from what my friend told me.

I bought mine for $6500, it had a hellacious oil leak(from the oil thermostat o-ring) I did drive it over 250 miles home though. the body was fairly straight, but had a cheap repaint from silver to burgundy. the interior was ragged....a little rough around the edges to say the least. If you constantly check out the different forums, and ebay, you can put together a nice car for a relatively low cost, that is, if you do all of the work yourself. 8 months later, and my car is sorted out nicely. I even have the A/C working on it. new interior, and paint. all for under $12,000 total investment. The bad thing is, i would probably break even on it with the way the market is right now on these cars if i were to sell it.
it went from this...

to this.

So true, bought mine for 18.5K, put in about $1000 replacing the fuel injector, new tires and lubing the suspension/bushings to get rid of annoying squeeky noises.

A better answer is, "not likely".

I second the 944 / 944 Turbo thought for $6-$8k. You'll have a better handling car too, for that price range.

I think it's unlikely you'll find a decent 911 for $6000, although you may get lucky. I have a friend who has an '82 SC with 150k miles for sale and he wants somewhere in that neighborhood - problem is the car is a neglected, abused rolling parts car.

My advice is to keep saving, keep searching and be patient.

Bought my '81 sc 4 years ago for 6K. Actually got about 20,000 miles before the rebuild and new clutch were necessary... Needs paint badly, but I keep telling myself its patina. 287,000 miles too...As someone else said, they are all $20,000.00 dollar cars...

I bought maybe 5 or 6 in that range over the years. Heck, one was a near pristine 81 for 3300.00. Keep this in mind, there are a lot of 911's on dealer lots for 9-15 grand. That means they were bought for 5-9 grand. In fact I once bid on one lot of 3 Porsches. One nice 87 928, a 83 race prepped 911(engine-less) and a 1980 running and decent 911.... for 10 thousand dollars! For 6 g's though, your going to have to get a dealer's license and go to auctions.

The answer depends on YOU not the car. My 78SC daily driver (200k miles) is probably worth around $6k and I would have no hestitation to take it on a long trip. What you want to buy is a daily driven car that your friends will say "You paid $6k for that!" So you have to accept a certain level of rust and interior wear to cut the $20k price for a cream puff. Can you deal with that?

If you can, find a well worn daily driver and have a good PPI on the mechanical aspects of the car. Also look at the owner and if he/she is paranoid about the car it probably looks better than it is.

Lastly, you have to be able to do electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and minor repair. If you take it to $100-per-hour-Hans everytime a fuse blows the costs will eat you.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/1418245528.html

911S Barn Find- very straight body, all original except 6 pack weber carbs, stainless steel exhaust. Car runs, but has something wrong with one of the cyclinders?- can move around fine, but will need some attention before being road worthy. Please call 919-524-7997 for more info.

In my previous post, this is the kind of car I'd be very careful with. It looks good in the picture but it's not being used. If you're into an engine job and other thing to get it roadworthy you might as well get the $20k car straight away. But then if you just want to look at it, it might be a good deal.
