I like the fact that VR-1 is available "over the counter" as it were. I bought a bunch at Napa Auto today based on this thread. We'll see how it goes.

Thank you very much for sharing your analysis results. That is very interesting stuff.

I am going to look into the availability of VR-1, might be an easier-to-find solution up here in Canada...

Out of curiosity, what sort of $ does an oil analysis typically run?

It is also worth noting that the need for additional cam lobe protection during break in is pretty well documented on our engines, and that a proper break in helps to prevent premature cam wear, and can extend cam lobe life with borderline oils.

I have no interest in Valvoline or Blackstone. I was not promoting their oil or their analysis service. Its just the oil and analysis service I use. I was advocating oil analysis as a means to see how your engine is wearng and your oil is performing and of course to see what the real ZDDP content of your oil really is vs claims. Its the real deal.

Blackstone charges $20 for a basic analysis such as the one I posted. A TBN report is another $10, but it really isn't necessary unless you are doing extended oil changes and are interested in how much of your additive package is left at the change.

I also use them for my Ford F-250 Powerstoke diesel oil and its transmission. They provide free sample containers, instructions etc on their Blackstone Labs website. Turn around time is about 5-7 days. A google search will get you to their site.

Good luck

Wow, that is a very reasonable cost for such good information. I have my oil drained out now while I do some upgrades and maintenance on my car. However, in the spring I'm going to try the VR-1 and, following that, have an oil analysis performed at the next change to learn how my engine is doing.

Thanks again!

Man I wish I ignored this thread

Now I'll spin the bottle to decide between Brad Penn or the Valvoline VR-1

I've done some UOA's on the 944 running Brad Penn for 7-8 race hours and it performs well. Ran my 1987 Targa all summer on Mystik 15w50 CJ4 diesel/HDEO and that report came back looking fine...and in the cup car I've been running Redline 10w40. My opinion and advice, although far from scientific, is to choose a reputable, easily obtainable oil with the correct credentials and sleep well at night!

John,

I would run either and not lose any sleep. Like I said, I ran BP but it became a pain to get so I researched and found VR1 looked like a good substitute. UOA seems to support the research.

Thanks for the anaylsis; I had a major engine rebuild back in the Spring by Franz Blam Racing, and their recommendation for engine oil was the Valvoline 20-50 VR-1 Racing Oil with the ZDDP.

Without getting into a mile long thread or debate on the subject, I thought that those interested would enjoy seeing an actual oil analysis of a DE tracked, 3.6 engine.

Notes:
A...20-50 Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil
B...55,000 miles on engine
C...Oil and filter change every 4th event
D...Analysis is from 1,000 track miles on the 2.9 mile road course at Texas World Speedway and the 2.8 mile course at Mid Ohio.
E...The time period was from April thru September of this year.
F...Blue (C) and Yellow (B) run groups
G...Engine pulls hard all the time, rarely falling below 4500 and continually up to 6800, oil temps typically run at the 8:00 position and at the hottest hit the 9:00 position.

Attached are the Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis and PDF Spec sheet from Valvoline on the oil...

I switched back to VR-1 last change. The BP was finding everyplace it could to get out and it is a bit of an inconvenience to get as well. Nice to know thanks for the info Lynn.

I'm glad I could help a little. I thought I'd try posting an analysis, eliminating opinions and showing actual results in at least one real in a real world application. Hopefully others may decide to give oil analysis a try and we can get broader reports on other brands of oils. I will post mine after every change.

Good luck to all.
