Default How to monitor oil consumption when you...

hava a leak(s)? I have been trying to monitor my oil consumption, been averaging bout 1qrt per 800 miles when im driving it often. However, when Im not driving it much I find small puddles of oil under my car(been trying to find problem, already did valve covers but that didnt solve it).
Anyway after 3 months and only 500 miles I just added 1 1/2 qrts, I guess small leaks slowly add up.
I realize this was probably a dumb question, Im sure some of you will say you cant really monitor unless you fix leak(s). But, most of our cars leak!

any recommendations?

thanks, leo

Small puddles? As in more than one?
Dude you have fix the leaks to narrow it down. A drip or two when sitting is one thing, but puddles?

well not puddles, I would say like an egg size spot after a week or so, its hard to tell, I keep a piece of drywall under car. I just had leak from valve covers fixed after doing valve adjustment bout 2 months ago.(mechanic says valves look fine) I will be searching for current leak soon. Possibly oil pressure switch?

I think it is a fair bit but others might disagree. I don't use a quart in 3,000 mikes. i use about 1 in about 5,000 miles. as I drop to "add" from the mid level at about 5,000 an dinstead of adding i just change it.

There are so many places you could be leaking from it is tough to tell, if you climb right under and have oil around the starter area and leaking rown the front side of the engine or dipping into tthe collector area where the the exhaust tubes go ito one then i would say the oil switch , the breather or the cooler seals.

the middle of the engine could be return tubes or base gaskets , and the back of the engine could be chain box seals or the cam seal to the chain box. mine even leaks a littel beyween case halfs. Don't think i will be fixing that any time soon.

that's why I bought mine .. something to tinker with .. i am thinking of pulling my engine out this winter and moving it to the basement for the cold winter months ... it doesn't really need anything ... but it would be a fun project.

Mine started leaking at the left cam chain housing on a hot day this summer. The next day I checked it, and it was dry. There is something not completely known about 911 oil leaks. I would say, clean the engine thorougly and check often in order to find oil leaks. Also, a 911 that sits a lot will have more leaks than one that is driven at least once every few weeks or so.
