Peter Zimmermann (I like to call him Dr. Z) says it's fine to hold it in first.

I've always heard and seen problems with syncros before throwout bearings, maybe because they're changed w the clutch, so I'd tend to agree with that. If the syncros go, it seems like it's always first or second.

having just carried out the project of replacing the gearbox mounts and replacing the bushings in the gearstick assembly and rear coupler with superpro bushes, (see my post 'first project done') i can only say it transformed the sloppy loose feel that my shift had before i did it. My stick literally felt like a spoon in a large empty saucepan before ! This was despite the box having been re-built in 04 by a reputable P-specialist, so i can only imagine how bad some 915 shifts are that have never been re-built.
Getting some nice new swepco into it should deliver the coup de grace
Then at a later date i will get the seine-gate and/or short shift kit installed.
But ultimately i am hoping to go for a g-box rebuild and get a Guards LSD fitted further down the line

I have made the mistake of shifting into 1st while coming to a slow rolling stop and received mild grinding protest from my 915 tranny....not a good feeling or sound. I also discovered that if I leave it in neutral until the light turns green and then depress the clutch and shift into 1st, I have received similar results.

Since this has only happened only a few times, I don't believe I've done any major damage to my tranny, but I'm more careful shifting from neutral to First and from any other gear to First than I was last month when I started driving my 1982 911SC Targa.

Good luck and enjoy your piece of history. They don't make cars like this any more IMHO.

What I found is that when shifting into any gear with a 915, especially 1st and 2nd gear, it REALLY helps to pause a fraction of a second when going through neutral and "present" the shifter to the gear by softly pushing up against it and then make the shift. When I bought my P-car, that's what the seller told me to do and I haven't had one single grind.

Going from neutral to 1st at a light, most of the times works, but sometimes I can't get the shifter into 1st gear. I then disengage the clutch and try again. That always works.

A properly adjusted clutch! new cable and helper as mentioned earlier is a good start. Otherwise there are just quirks one must live with / get used to. after a while it just becomes second nature.....

If you don't already have an adjustable gas pedal, and you are accustomed to heel and toe-ing, then I'd recommend one.
more details on this please
