my 914-6 with dual triple choke Webers and an exhaust that is pretty much like the SSIs with a muffler sounds a lot noisier than the 3.2 911 does. Of course, the engine is about arms length away from my right ear, and only a thin piece of plexiglass separates me from the engine.
The reason to eliminate the stock exhaust is to get rid of the cross pipe, catalytic converter, and 1-in-1-out muffler. When you go to SSIs from a stock 3.2 exhaust, you have to buy a muffler too, so a lot of people might consider a "sport" muffler. Hence, the comments generally regarding noise levels. I agree that if you were to install a modified stock muffler with a second inlet, you might get noise levels similar to stock. That is, until you blow out all the stuffing.

any UK 911 owners feel free to chime in on this ?...am beginning to think i am the only Brit carrera owner on here! am interested to know what results guys have had with various exhaust mods ie cat or muffler bypass etc, both in quality of sound and loudness (track day Db limit compatible), and where in the UK they got their parts.

I have a last of the line 1989 Carrera.
Later 3.2's had the bigger Fuchs
Mine has the foglight built in to the rear cluster.
Turbo tie rods sound like a good improvement. The rods from the steering rack have rubber joints on the 3.2, whereas the turbo did not (not done this on mine).
1984 - 911 Carrera 3.2 replaces 3.0 litre 911SC. Main features include a larger and more powerful engine with Bosch Motronic ECU, plus larger brake discs, integral front fog lamps, and telephone-dial light-alloy wheels.
1985 - Four-spoke steering wheel introduced, together with a radio aerial built in to the windscreen, new Boge suspension dampers, seat-belt buckles integrated into the seats, and a shorter-throw gear shift. Central-locking becomes standard.
1986 - Improvements include a revised dashboard with larger air vents, 20mm lower seats, new sunvisors with covered vanity mirrors, a cabin-temperature sensor on the dashboard, and larger anti-roll bars and torsion-bar rear springs.
1987 - All-new G50 gearbox introduced, together with larger, hydraulically operated clutch. Rear fog lamps now integrated with reflective rear panel, front lyres increased in size to 195/65VR15, and engine power output of US models increased to 217bhp.
1988 - Standard wheels now Fuchs forged alloys, and electric seats become standard equipment.
1989 - 16-inch wheels become standard. Alarm system linked to central-locking, with flashing LED alarm indicators in doorlock buttons; CD player now an option, Carrera 3.2 discontinued in September after the 964-bodied 911 Carrera 4 and 2 enters full production.
