Default possibly buying an 86

local dealer has an 86 911, he want's 12,900 for it, it has 92k original miles. i looked at it today, it starts and runs well. it's only 1 big issue it that since the mid 90's it had a bra on it's front end, and when removed it removed some clear coat and paint. it's started to rust so my idea was to offer low end like 11g and see what's going from there. i'm having issues finding where i could get a new trunk lid for it?

if i don't get it, i'll let you guys know, other than that paint on the front it's in really good shape. targa top, with the bar painted black, as is the car, with a gray leather interior. i know it was a manual, but never paid attention to a 4spd or a 5spd trans. the only interior issue, it's steering wheel leather has started to rip.

i also noticed that the dealer had it marked a 3.3l, but i thought that only the turbo's of that year had a 3.3, and the rest were 3.2l, any clarification on that would be greatly appreciated. i might just have a dealer run the vin

Its definetly a 3.2L and the steering wheel you could have redone for $300.00. I would say have the hood repaired and painted as its aluminium you should really have surface rust at best.

There's no clear coat on this car, it's single stage paint. You can have the hood re-sprayed, after filling to fix the rust, probably run you a couple of hundred dollars.

That price sounds VERY low, even in this market, the mileage isn't particularly high. I'd make sure you have extensive service records, particularly for the last decade and you should get a PPI done on it.

It's a 3.2.

aluminum doesn't rust ... only something with ferous content rusts... but having said that i didn't think the hood was aluminum anyway . I thought it was galvanized steel unless you have some rare racing varient that was lightened.

is there a particular reason to believe this was single stage paint .. ? I thought clears were used a lot earlier than this

just to be clear

It's single stage. When you detail the car with a buffer, paint comes off on to the pads. You won't really see much of this on a car with a clear coat. My white pads turn red after I'm done detailing my car.

My car is guards red. The pad on the left was orange and the one on the left was white before I started a recent detail.

I understand what a single stage paint its . I guess my question is how do you know the car the OP is talking about is single stage . i know guards red is single stage but does that make all Porsche colours single stage ?

just wonderin.

I'm not exactly sure, but I don't think they went to clear coat until the late 80s, maybe 89.

that's what i thought about the motor size, just a misprint.

i looked it up, it's a galvanized steel just the same as any other "normal" Porsche from that era.

i'm not buying it, i'm starting to have more issues with my 944, and I'd rather have a good DD than an OK one and one that needs a little work, it's located at Quickway auto sales on rt.57 in Washington, NJ...that's Washington of Morris County. if it's still there next weekend, i'll see if i can get pics.
