Another price check thread: '82 SC
There seems to be a lot of price check threads these days, so I hope you can tolerate one more:
I'm looking at a 3-owner '82 SC coupe, black/black, whale tail, with 75K miles on the clock. Good records. Serviced, cold AC. Said to be cosmetically excellent inside and out (where have I heard that before? ), with only a minor sag to the headliner. Asking price is $16.5K. Price seems a bit high to me, but let me know what you think.

I personally dont think 16.5 is high for a 75,000 mile car in excellent shape. I know that if the car needs work you can drop a fortune into the car. Then again in todays market any car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

That's a great price provided that it can stand up to:

It's pretty much impossible for a technician to evaluate true mileage, but a great car won't have had a color change, might still have its original seats, and might have had synchros and a clutch already done. Your PPI technician must have a solid SC background, if he doesn't something will be overlooked.
One tip-off as to true condition is, "How long has the last owner had the car?" If its been a year or less, look out! He could have had an accident, or his mechanic might have uncovered a costly needed repair.

JB said it all. These cars are worth what somebody will pay, this holds true from the sellers point of view.
From the buyers point of view, these cars trade on condition. I am buying and selling 911s all the time and mileage and records are factors, but I've seen cars with 'reasonable' miles that are trashed and I've seen high-milers that are awesome. Same goes for records, I recently looked at a one owner 88 targa with the most complete collection of records EVER!! but the car was filthy had body damage and needed a clutch...... Bottomline, complete records and low miles are not a guarantee. Never buy sight unseen because a car can be great 'on paper' and severely misrepresented upon personal inspection. That's why these 'how much is it worth?' threads are so frustrating. Remember, you will not be driving the CarFax, the stack of records or the line of promises the seller might give you. You will be driving the car period and it is how well it performs that matters, nothing else. Now that said, many people buying and selling don't necessarily know the difference between good and evil with these cars. This is where a solid PPI by and well known indy shop is valuable. There are people all over this site that are knowledgable and willing to check out cars for others in good faith.

hit send too quick...
#2 does it live up to your expectations?
#3 if so, then get serious pay for the PPI.
#4 negotiate any issues in the price.
#4 drive and enjoy!
