I have a chance to pick up a 1977 911s for 7k. the car has a 10ft paint job and 98k miles on it. the interior looks nice and the underside is pretty clean. I will post pics if I pick it up

I don't think you're going to get an answer here without a better description of the car / engine work. There are so many different things that can cause the value of these cars to range from a few thousand to mid to high teens.

How much are you willing to pay?

Just don't pay more then what an SC or Carrera would fetch in similar condition.

Also, order a copy of Pete Zimmerman's book first.

As the last of the narrow body 911s, unless you specifically want a NB, you would be far better off with a 911SC. The engines are magnesium, and thermally a nightmare. By now that engine should have the Dilivar studs (better match to magnesium thermally to reduce pulling of the studs)(or ARP studs). Also, it should have the Carrera tensioner upgrade. I would say that if it doesn't have that it has been owned by people who have not been knowledgeable in the 911 engine.

A well sorted 2.7 is a real screamer. They can make a great 911 if gone through properly. Many a SC and Carrera owner would love to have the performance a nice 2.7 will produce. A magnesium case engine is very desirable. They, again, are superb if properly sorted and save some weight in the most critical area - some claim to feel the differance.
Be careful with the mid cars. They can be the best of the best, or the worst of the worst.

My 911S (MY77) was the worst 911 I have ever owned. I ordered it from the factory, and drove it in excess of 100,000. "A real screamer" is far from my thoughts of it.

The '74 and '75 were noticably better cars. '76 and '77 were the pits. The silly 5-bladed fan and thermal couplers killed the cars. I know a couple of '74 models that will rival any 3.6 in acceleration. One is remarkably stock and just "right". Another is beyond comparison because it has been very well built into a 2.8 RSR/twin plug/webers that will only run on race fuel - all in a stock gold body and wheels/tires. The '74 was still pretty light and a 2.7 can really rev-it adds up.
Most SC are really old and some have been father/son projects. Its hard to find a pre '87 car that is unmollested at a fair price. The mid year cars will likely need a bunch to make them nice, but a lot of SC's fall into the same catagory nowadays. The middies are gonna have their day yet.

X2

My brother used to have a 77 Targa owned since new, gave up after the 4th engine removal to reseal, then the tranny went at 90,000 miles.
