Default What does a U.S. 3.2 Carrera really weigh??

Uber geek inquiry here.

Something is driving me nuts. I am really struggling to nail down a curb weight for a 84-86 or 87-89 Carrera Coupe.

Going from the Porsche spec booklet (which I've found do contain errors occasionally), the listed DIN curb weight for a 3.2 coupe is 1210 kg, or 2,668 lbs. There is no designation as to if that is a RoW coupe or a US coupe. Only one weight is given.

OK, fine. BUT, in the 82-83 911 SC spec booklet, the RoW weight for a SC Coupe is listed 1160 kg (2,557 lbs.), and the DIN curb weight for a US spec coupe is listed at 1250 kg (2,756 lbs.)

Now I have a very hard time believing that a US 3.2 Carrera weighs 88 lbs. less than a '82-'83 US 911 SC, so the quoted 2,668 lb. figure in the 3.2 spec book must be a RoW weight.

So what is the US 3.2 Carrera figure? I'd be tempted to simply add 90 kgs to the 3.2 Carrera figure (the difference between the RoW 911SC and the US 911SC), but we all know it might not be that simple. That would end up being 1300 kg, or 2,866 lbs.

Has anyone weighed their cars here? Can anyone point me to a factory printed US Spec 3.2 Carrera curb weight? And that's not taking into account the 915 vs. G50 transmission thing...

Thanks,
-Mirror

I had mine (88 Coupe) weighed at a scale last month with a full tank + me in the car.
3020 lbs
Subtract 160 for me and you get 2860

That provides excellent info for me, and answers another question that I hadn't asked in the original post. The spec book only lists one weight for the '84 - '87 cars, and obviously there will be a weight difference for the '87+ G50 vehicles.

With your car being a G50 and the observed weight a scant 6lbs. from my calculations, I'll go ahead and assume that Porsche lists the curb weight from the latest model covered in their spec books.

Awesome. Now I can extrapolate the weights for other US Spec G50 cars:

Turbo-look coupe: 2,866 + 110 lbs. = 2,976 lbs.
Cabrio: 2,866 lbs. + 160 lbs. = 3,026 lbs. (assuming Leffingwell's info is correct)
Turbo-look Cabrio: 2,866 + 110 + 160 = 3,136 lbs. (like that one matters, they imported what, like 20 of those to the US?)

Thanks,

Hi rusnak -

Thanks for that, I indeed came across the same test in an old Gold portfolio I had buried on my bookshelf. After analysis, I decided not to trust that C&D figure of 2,760 lbs., as it matches up almost exactly to the Porsche quoted curb weight for a '83 SC of 1,250 kg (2,755.8 lbs.). Hard to say what info source Larry Griffin used in coming up with 2,760 lbs., its proven to be quite difficult to determine early Porsche weights from the factory literature. Lots of inconsistencies!

Cheers,

That old article was great. But 5.3 seconds 0-60? For a 200 hp 3.2 with a slow shifting 915 tranny? Something sounds screwy there. I think someone back then was a little quick clicking the stopwatch.

Another data point: Had my US spec 1987 coupe on a weigh scale last year.
No driver, full tank of fuel, DAS bolt-in rollbar, lighter DE seats, 16" 7,8 Fuchs,
otherwise completely stock: 2900lbs

Just checked my NJ registration card, which does not list a weight. I think when I lived in VA years ago, the registration cards used to state a weight. I wonder if anyone lives in a state that does that, and could check.

Mine ('87) is stripped of A/C and heat but has a single turbo and intercooler.

Mine weighs 2750lbs.

Based on other responses, I should also add that my car is a US car.
I brought it across from Michigan.
I'm not sure if there is a weight difference between US & Can cars tho. I thought the Can cars were exactly the same as US.

My car is also a sunroof delete car and has no tail, so there would probably be some weight reduction as compared to other cars that have those options.
Otherwise, I still have all the other usual bits like A/C and such.
