Default any non 911 uses of the flat six out there?

I was just wondering, does the rear engine application of the 911's power plants leave them out of being used, no matter how poorly engineered, in a front engine application?
I think the only non 911 use I've seen was a VW van...but that is also rear engine.

the reason I ask is a VW Jetta just passed me on the hiway a few minutes ago and sure sounded like a 911.

Not that know of.

Jetta could have had a VR6 with an aftermarket exhaust.

A not so successful attempt as a airplane engine?

Actually, I believe the engines have been used in aircraft. In the 1980's, Mooney, which built high-performance single engine private planes did so. I think a few are still flying.

The Mooney aircraft was actually pretty successful. I am not aware of any problems, but I don't know much about it. My Porsche factory instructor oversaw the development of the aircraft application. Acording to him, they built in redundant fuel/ignition as well as failsafe cam drives.
The Goodyear blimps used turbocharged engines in some applications. There are a few 944 front-911 powered cars.
Lots of VW type 1/2 transplants.

Yup, the Mooney airplane was a great project, just probably too expensive.

I remember a baja bug that had a 911 engine. They put an oil cooler on the roof. That thing was fast.

I also ran into a vw van guy who has an owners manual of the VW bus that Porsche installed a flat six in. Apparently, the factory was experimenting with the flat six motor in the bus, maybe as a research project. Anyway, they went as far as to write a manual for it as if they were thinking of going into production.

They also had a prototype 911 powered super beetle. Mid-engine.

My brother in law used to have a sporty Subuaru model that had, I think, a 6 cylinder Subaru boxer engine in it. Not sure if he really knew, but he claimed it was a design licensed from Porsche. It was a great car, although heavier than a 911. The engine gave it a lower center of gravity than it would have had with a straight or V-6.

Subaru's oft lamented (but IMHO brilliant) SVX had a flat six.

Quick Reply: any non 911 uses of the flat six out there?
