Post Bilstein shock storage.

Gruppe:

I have been told that my Bilstein shocks (sports in this case x4) should be stored in a warm location in an upright position, especially 24-48 hours prior to installation.

Is this true? What would be the reason; fluids? Viscosity?

Thanks!

Oh, thank God. At first I thought you said "Bilstein shock shortage."

I've never heard that one before. Do you suppose suppliers and dealers store them in a warm place vertically? After they're on the car they have to work in a wide variety of temperatures. If what you say is true, I'll be bringing my car inside the house during the winter.

I don't know how lame this post must sound, but I reached the critical mass state on this topic after talking to several folks. Each person advocated this method for shock storage and prep. for installation (the "at least 24 hours prior" statement).

I am sure that warehouses do not adhere to anything along these lines. Side storage is ideal in a bin so that is pretty much that.

Ya know, I will mail Bilstein USA for their take. Probably should have done that already..I will post any reply I get from them.

I'd like to know too. I've had a set laying in my closet for a while.

Hello

The rule is to store the shocks upside down so the seal is covered with oil and will not get to dry over the years. Also on Gusstruts the gas chamber is in the botom and will diffuse some gas trough the seals over the years. This is slower when stored correct.

However this only affects long term storage.

Warm locations will not support humidity sit on the metal surface and therefore rust will not show up.
