Front 16x7's on '88 Carrera CS
I'm thinking about swapping out my front 16x6 Fuchs with 16x7's (I have 16x8's in the rear). Will be using the standard 205/55 tires in front. Will standard 930 wheels fit okay? Since my car is lowered I may have to roll the fenders but I am also concerned about the offset on the 16x7's. I saw some 16x7's on eBay that listed part no. 951 362 115 00; will these work ?
What are the pros/cons of going for the wider wheels in front? I will be doing occasional autocrossing but mostly street driving.
Do the wider wheel/tire combo require a lot more steering effort over 6's at lower speeds; i.e parking etc.? I know this is fairly subjective , but appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks!

Tom,
I ran 7x16 and 8x16's, with stock tire sizes, on my 911SC, for track wheels (I also drove to the track on them). Didn't have to roll the front fenders (did when I put 944 8x16's in front), and they worked nicely. The benefit of the 7" rim in front is that you're spreading out the sidewall, making it a little stiffer. I don't recall noticing any change in steering effort. There were two types of 7x16's made, one for the 944 (part number starts with 951) and one for the 911 (part number starts with 911). Both will fit, and have the same 23.3mm offset. The difference is the 944 version is shaped slightly differently to support larger brake calipers.

Tom:
I have run my lowered 78 SC with 7x16 225x50's (with STANDARD 911 offset - NOT the 944 offset) and 9x16 with 245x45's with almost no problems.
1.You will need to roll your front fender lips.
2.You may have minor rub on inside of wheel well liner on lock to lock turns. (This should not be a problem on the track or autocrossing, only when parking or maneuvering the car.)

Both 911 and 944 7x16's have the same 23.3mm offset. The 944's are shaped slightly differently to accomodate the larger 944 calipers.

That is true with 225's - I also had to roll my fender lip with 225's on 8's in front. However, I didn't have to roll the fender lip, and didn't have any rubbing, with stock 205's on 7's, which is what Tom said he was going to run.

There is only one o/s for 7" Fuchs it is the same for 15" or 16", 911 or early 944 it is +23.3mm. There is also a 944 8"x16 w/ the same +23.3,mm o/s
I agree totally w/ Bill G. I have had 7x15 and 7x16 w/ 205/50 and 205/55 respectively the lips needed no work in either case. The 944 8x16 w/ +23.3mm o/s and 225/50x16 needed almost total removal of the lips to work. But that just made it easier to use 235/45 on 8x17

I wonder if the strut type has anything to do whether the 7X16 w/205's rub on some cars. Those of you who rubbed, are you running Boge or Bilstein struts?I'm runnig Bilstein with 7X16/205's, 1.25 degrees neg. camber and slightly lowered. I have contemplated running 951 8X16/205's, but no one has reported this set-up without having to roll lips.
Thanks,
d.

8's are too wide for 205's. Manufacturer recommendations range up to 7.5" rims for 205's. If you want to go with 8's, you'll need to go with 225's. With the 8's, you could try adding some more negative camber (with resultant inside tire wear), but should be prepared to roll the lips.
