What year is your car? Do you know if it's ever been replaced before??

Some signs will be a "grindy" feeling in the clutch pedal, if your pedal bushings are okay, the lining in your cable is likely kaput.

It is a fairly easy changeout item on pre G-50 cars, costs around $70 and makes a WORLD of difference in the smoothness of the clutch pedal and gives further travel to disengage your clutch...which could improve your shifting!

When I had my '82 SC and finally decided that I didn't want to experience a clutch cable failure at the track, I invested and changed it out. Man oh man did I wish I had performed that move YEARS before I did. It felt like a whole new clutch.

Alot of people replace the clutch helper spring at the same time. Another $60, but should make the clutch action alot lighter.

If it feels rough even though the ends are lubricated and free; replace it. If you have had the car a long time and you have a sudden change in pedal height, replace it. As the cable wears individual wires in the cable break and the cable unravels inside, streches and lengthens, what you will get is a pedal which feels like it is out of adjusment. Any large "out of adjustment" which happens quickly means your on borrowed time. If you are in gear when the cable pops, your still in gear and hope there is nothing in front of you. I broke one once and managed to drive it in 2nd gear all the way home across town, but every stoplight was a scare...
