Post Resting motor on SSI's - Help quick.

I am planning on taking my motor out tomorrow morning. Can I rest the engine on SSI's during the process? If so, how much time can I rest it on them. It is a 77 911 Carrera 3.0 ROW.
Thanks.

Cool

David,

The common method is to support the engine by a board or plywood underneath the heat exchangers, It is totally ok, unless you have rusted out heat exchangers, in which case they need to be replaced anyway. This distributes the load just fine. The only thing to be careful about is that the center of gravity of the engine/trans is further forward than the heat exchangers, the jack will need to be almost to the bellhousing to balance the assembly. Too far back and the nose of the transmission will droop down and push the engine tight against the rear mounts until you drop it.

This looks more daunting than it is, just go slow, let us know how it goes. Do you have a haynes or clymer manual? Both show this process.

regards

from 101 Projects, p29, on engine removal,
"...try not to let the engine rest on the heat exchangers. Use blocks of wood [on] the engine case..."

Remember, this is one person's opinion (albeit in ink), not a bible.

very true! another non-bible that I've found useful is the Bentley Service Manual, which implies you CAN drop the whole 600 lb. engine-trans. assembly directly onto boards upon a rolling cart. it's also a good idea to have at least one friend there to tell you what you are doing wrong & run for beer. good luck!
