Default Just changed 10 Qt of 14 Qt oil change for '89 911

So I bought a 1989 911 last summer and had a fresh oil change at the time. So I decided to change the oil myself several weeks ago. I look in the manual and notice it needs 10.5 Qts at oil change but has 13.7 total in it due to the front lines to cooler. Since this oil change I put on no more than 200 miles, probably more like 125 miles. So I had the time and figured I would blow the $70 on oil and change it again to see if I could dilute the rest of those 3 Quarts that get left in there.

Much to my surprise today when changing the oil I find it very black, very black. I did not expect it to be as black as it was.

So two questions....

1. What made the oil so black, the 3 Quarts left in there or running the car for as little as 125 to 200 miles. Probably a combination I guess

2. What do most people do about the 3 Qts left in the lines, just leave in in or is there a way to blow it out back into the dry sump?

Not sure what to expect as far as answers from you guys, but am sure once again a fellow Rennlister will come to the rescue.

Three things make the oil black after such short mileage:

1) Excessive fuel richness due to either LOTS of cold starts (and trips) or perhaps a stuck fuel injector or bad head temp sensor.

2) Excessive engine blowby due to ring problems.

3) Too much oil in the tank which pushes excess oil into the airbox where its burned.

Two other things I forgot to mention...

1. mileage is at 59,000

2. The car seemed to burn some oil during the past 10 months of use of about 2,000 miles, maybe a quart.

Thanks for your info Steve!

Thanks in advance for any other ideas this info brings!

Sometimes it is a worthwhile investment to change the oil out several times in succession after driving 500 miles between changes. You wind up with cleaner oil, and you are flushing out any contaminants that might cause an oil filter to clog prematurely.

This is good to do with cars that don't get run a lot, or if you don't know the history of the oil changes.

Not that I am a mechanic or anything, but I have done this with several cars I have purchased.

What makes oil black is the additives in them. Rarely do you ever see mineral oil (formerly break-in oil) ever turn black because it just doesn't have all that stuff in it.

Hey Doyle,

I used up my allotment of posted photos on the 997 GT@/GT3 forum. I was at the New York Int Auto Show and posted photos.

Thanks for asking in any event. It is guards red with the tan interior.

Can you post a photo of yours?

Mike

Sure,..these are after two months of ownership....I've now had her for over 2 1/2 years......that nasty rear wiper is now gone,..making use of that console switch for the front aux cooler fan control.

Best,

Doyle

NICE Doyle, Very Nice!!!

I am due to get the new GT3 and am sure I will love it. However, I do not think I will ever be able to part with my 1989 911. It just puts a smile on your face sitting inside it!

Enjoy yours in good health!

Wish I could add a GT3 to the stable. The pig below kept that out of the cards for me (that Wife....)

Hey Doyle, I like the response of the guy who said...

"The 911 is saying "Hello immediately depreciating asset."

Enjoy the stable!!!

The "guy" is dead on with his observations....probably in large amounts of $$$.
