Let's see how a 996 will look compared to the air-cooled model 25 years from now. Will there be parts avaiable to keep the 996 loking fresh (rubber seals, interior parts, body panels etc)

After taking my Mom on a drive with the Targa last year she stated that it drives, feels and sounds just like a "real" sports car should be at all speeds. No cupholders, GPS, A/C, Power Steering, soft suspension, and the other fluff.

She has recently suggested that I convert the power windows to manual.

I guess I'm in the market for a 3.2 for a couple reasons.

1) It brings back nostalgic memories of my late father's VW Beetle.
2) It's a mechanical device that you drive, rather than a rolling computer that drives you.
3) We're lucky enough to already have a GT car (BMW M3). I want to get back to a real sports car.

When it's August and I'm cursing the A/C...I may need to re-read this thread!

I posted this over there........I'm such a troll:

Scanning past the first post, had anyone noted that vacuum assist (aka power brakes) were introduced with MY77? (Which makes that last 2.7L car kind of a non-flared SC.) Stock brakes are fine; I used them extensively on all of my torsion bar track cars.

If it all goes to hell, and I have to economize, the RS clone would be the last to go. 10-1 lb/wt ratio, 275 rear tires, suspension done right, proper diff, hell even the stock brakes as long as the weight was around 2400lbs...........car would stack up well with all but the latest and greatest driven at a high level. They did an excellent job designing the thing almost 50 years ago; ingenuity along the way has brought it to a place I'm sure the original designers would not be able to comprehend.

To the point earlier of an RSA not being able to keep up with a 996 on track. Maybe, maybe not. I can run equal with Mooty in his GT3RS with the yellow car, equal tires. Go scan club racing results and you'll find the true performance difference. It's not as much as you think!

Lol... The mere fact that our 30 year old air-cooled cars are so often mentioned for comparison speaks volumes!

C'mon guys, can't we just appreciate all the P-cars??? I'm planning to own at least one of all of them (not necessarily at the same time...) before it's all done!

I was fortunate to have a couple of 'real' 911s from the good old days (1970s and 1980s). But, alas, I knew there was no way I was going to get that thing to pass California emissions, when the only piece between the turbocharger and the exhaust tip was a length of pipe bent in the middle... :-) There was nothing quite like hearing reports from other drivers about that strange "blue flame" coming from the car periodically.

I agree.

If I was going to have just one car as a DD it would either be the 996 or 997.

Absolutetely. But, my issue with that thread is that our cars were somewhat being looked down upon. Not a knock on the posters, they just didn't have the FACTS.

Well they were certainly what I would call " back handed compliments " not sure if that term is used in the U.S. or not ...

But who really cares anyway I already drive a 996/ 997 as my winter beater ... for some reason they badged it a NIssan though ...

I posted there as well. I thought I would correct the perception about high maintenance cost and poor brakes on SC's. I love the brakes on the SC and maintenance costs are very small given the age. The brakes can drag it down from crazy speeds with no drama whatsoever. Granted, I've spent money over the years to keep the car in a state where maintenance costs are low.

I think the OP realized he may have driven one that had some issues.

Whatever. I've had mine for about 25K now. Other than 4 shocks, some brake work, some tie rods, and the regular tune up stuff I have done nothing to it and it has never missed a beat. It is my DD and those of you who know me know that I have driven it through just about everything. I enjoy my car and that's all that matters to me. If someone else doesn't like my car...good for them.

That's why I call them "Stealerships"
No way would I bring my VW to the dealer to pay $105 per hour for labor.

Plus the air-cooled motors do not self-destruct without warning. I've heard of some owners driving in DE's with broken headstuds for a few years without problems.
