Early 911 Barn Find in progress

Is it time to move this to OT ? it may be interesting reading for some but is really more of a drawn out soap with no end than a technical discusion.

This is one of the best stories I've read on the forum! I think it has plenty of technical aspects associated with the age, storage and potential restoration needs of the car. Best of Luck, Chris

If it wil help. I bought a 78SC that had been sitting for 7 years. He wanted $10k. I looked and offered $7K and settled at $7.5K. My rational was that a wholeseller might offer 4 or 5K for the car and if he fixed it up and got it thru inspection he might get $10k or so with no assurances it could get thru the inspection. Nobody will pay top dollar for this car, nor mine. I promised to love and keep it, not resell it. It helped that the owners wife liked me and wanted the parking space. Long story - short- I drive it daily. New tires, battery, flushed the fuel system, new fuel filter. Fired right up.

This was a wonderful story. I had a barn find with my current 914 and I was lucky enough to get it cheap. This particular 911 looks very interesting. Besides the carpets needing to be replaced I think the mold will clean off the seats, doors, etc. very nicely. Can't wait to find out how this ends!

And look at Oldtee's car. Very sweet. I'll bet you someone will see these pictures and be galvanized into action around buying a 911. This may be a technical forum, but we share our knowledge and enthusiasm for these cars, as well as our frustrations, failures and triumphs.
I love 911s, don't you ?

I have a punch list developed, and I do my _own_ PPI - no need for Fabio look alikes.
Rebuild engine to cure low compression. Outsource machine work. This could mean all new P&C - which may take the form of E spec. That would require cam regrind and pump space cam change. Pump needs to be rebuilt anyway as engine running rich - could be adjustment but lets err on the side of caution. Possible mech inj stack rebuild (outsource).
or - just plug in an SC engine.
Trans - go thru and check for noise in 3rd gear.
New tires, recondition wheels (outsource)
Rebuild sunroof mechanism, headliner and sunroof seals
New fender welting
Window rubber is actually not bad! Door seals are great as well
Recondition interior - this could take the form of cleanup first and see what we have. Potential for new carpet kit and front seat restuffing (outsource seat recondition)
Door pockets look bad
Recondition gauges (rusty trim rings could mean more serious work required here) - outsource
Possible rear wheel bearings and inner trailing arm bearings
New CV boots likely
Go thru electrics
New brake lines and rebuild calipers
Recoat gas tank
New fuel lines
New batteries
Most chrome looks like 00 steel wool will restore
General lubrication and small part repairs (door latches, etc)
The biggest benefit on this car is that a repaint and extensive rust repair does not seem to be required.

I just had a long talk with the owner. He thought my offer of 5K was fair and will be discussing it with his wife. He has a fair amount of extras to go along with car including the factory spare, tool kit and a variety of new factory interior trim parts. I think I have about a 50/50 shot right now.
