Default 911 vs 964? and think I found a good one...

I have a couple questions and would love your opinions on the car in the link. I am looking for a nice 911 / 964 in the Nashville area if possible (south east is reasonable).

1. If price were not a concern (since they seem roughly the same) would you rather have a 3.2 911 or 3.6 964?

2. What year did the G50 start being used? Would it have been standard in a 1984?

3. I am interested in the car in the link below - currious to hear your thoughts. I received many more pics and the only visibl thing I can see is that the carpet needs replacing - it is rather faded. I assume that is a relatively easy and inexpensive item.

1. I think you will find that most on this forum will prefer the 3.2. Less electronic gremlins and easier to wrench. I would use the search feature to look at previous posts as this topic has been previously covered in great detail.

2. The 84 had the 925 tranny. The G-50 started with the 87 model.

3. considering that this car has 119K miles, I do not think that $14.9 is a great bargain

I would suggest that you test drive the different models (ie. SC/carrera/G-50/964 before committing to making a purchase.

Correction on #2, it's a 915 tranny. Slip of the typing finger.

Doesn't seem over-priced to me...but who knows anything anymore in this market?

The price seems reasonable if the PPI looks good. A 964 in that price range is either in need of work or, is some sort of fire sale. Just my thoughts...

Brent,

Like mentioned previously, the G50 was introduced in 1987 model year. Are you interested in coupes too, or only cabs?

i am interested in coupes too. I especially like the 964 coupe but am not fully decided between a 3.2 or 3.6.

If you want AC that really works then go with the 964. If you still like the looks and sound of the older 911's go with a Carrera.

The aesthetics may be enough to make your decision. But if you like the looks of the 964, I would choose that over a G50 911 in a heartbeat ...overall condition and PPI all being equal, of course.

The 964 offers more power, better torque, especially down low, more civil for street (that may be a detriment, depending on what you want) but can always be transformed into a slot car, coil-over boingers, HVAC that actually works (and consistently), better NVH overall, but still carries with it all the visceral joy only an aircooled 911 can bring. Factor in the 964 has the "red-headed stepchild" reputation vs the 87-89's "last of the breed" perk, and you can find killer deals on a fine 964. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of love for the pre-964s, but depending on your intended mission, the 964 is the better overall platform IMHO.

That is good feedback. I actually prefer the looks of the 964 and I am looking for a car that has classic appeal while is still modern enough to drive daily. I do NOT want a huge status symbol or a 911 that looks like a modern one. Not the message I am trying to send. That is why I have limited myself to the 911 / 964. The 964 looking a bit more modern but still classic car style. I am interested in cabs and coupes. My delimma is that to purchase, I have to sell off my beloved restored 1973 Land Rover Series III 109.

If you are looking for a daily driver, I would definitely go with the 964 for the reasons I had mentioned. There are screaming deals out there now, especially in this economy (with apologies as I don not want to sound opportunistic), but selling your car to fund a purchase offers you that challenge.

Remember, too, that as much as I love the 964, there are known bugaboos which you must look out for (check out said forum and get friendly). Given the proper maintenance records and proof of addressing said issues, you will walk away with one of today's best bang-for-buck 911 that I can think of. Best of luck ...and post your success!

What Edward says makes sense.

964 = More creature comforts, better HVAC, better daily driver - but higher cost to repair (parts/labor)

84-89 Carrera = More visceral feel, fun as a weekend driver/track toy, simpler/cheaper to maintain, easier to DIY.

Either way, as said countless times here, don't buy any car w/o a thorough PPI w/ engine leakdowns. Good luck!

For daily driving, it may be difficult to beat the 964. Screaming deals or not, I suspect you are probably looking at around $20K for a nice example.
I'm at the other end in that we have a 964 and we're looking for an 84 to 86 Targa to add to it. There are decent prices on both right now but, I keep remembering a comment noted on this board several times... "they are all $20K cars".

I have come to that conclusion myself - "they are all 20K cars" Seems that anything less takes that much or more to get it ready for daily use. Oh, if only more of you 911 fans were also rover lovers like myself.....seems the economy has made it hard to move specialty vehicles like my classic series III.
