I have a Stock 1990 C2 Targa that I bought recently. I'm thinking about trading for an 80's SC or Carrera Coupe and then installing a 3.6. Has anyone done this, and can you give me any advice on what car to start with? I'd also love to hear about the performance of converted cars. How would it compare to my C2? Is it as quick as a 993 or quicker? ANY input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Mike

I didn't forget about you Bill, I even went to your home page to see if you had any info on your swap and didn't see any.
I just didn't hit all your home pages. Sorry bout that.
BTW Bill, any comment on <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002416" target="_blank">this?</a> Thanks.

Yeah, I guess I should reorganize that, as I've moved things around a lot. It's an ongoing project.
The car in your other question was misfiring terribly, as revs built the misfire became worse. As the ignition was working properly, the fuel was the primary suspect. The new fuel dist cured the problem. I never learned anything about the lambda system because i never had to use it.

If you're in Cali, a pre-74 is the ticket, to avoid the smog crap. I sucessfully got mine legalised thru the system, which was a mild PITA, but not too bad.
You can see some of the specs on my car @ <a href="http://www.vintagebus.com/porsche" target="_blank">http://www.vintagebus.com/porsche</a> and on my site. I too need to get it all coalesced some day...
Quick? It's OK I guess:

Bill,
I recognized your car immediately the first time I saw it in person at Lime Rock Park. Tomorrow you'll get to see (& hear) the Red Sled which, since monday, has been sitting out in the rain at DeMan's, getting "ready" for next week's D.E. at the Glen.
Have a safe trip.

Thom-I may have asked you this before but what other mods have you done to achieve that performance with your car? I am doing a 3.6 conversion in my 80SC and want to know what kind of performance increases I can expect. Thanks.

Not much to add to the above. It's a good idea, and if you do it right, you'll get a car that performs like Bill or Thom's. Check your smog laws, and then check with Steve Timmins.

Last week I spoke to Loren Beggs, the owner of By Design, in Montclair, CA. Loren and his crew turn out world class Club Racer care, for those in the need of such, from mild to radical.
I looked at a 86 Carrera where he had installed a 3.6 motor....not an eay job. I believe the fabrication and parts to include a kevlar clutch were in excess of $4,000 + the cost of the 993 motor. The car has been run on the track and street for the past few years and has proven to be "bullet proof".
The end result, a car with full leather interior, air, and all the creature comforts that will turn in the low 1:30s at Willow Springs International Raceway. I have a friend with a very quick 993TT that turns about the same times. He is a good driver...but he is driving a 3,300 pound car.
Also note, the 86 Carrera weighs in at about 2,700 pounds, that helps, and the fact that the driver is very talented, also helped achieve the 1:31 times.
Driving 3.6 equipped pre-89 car has got to be a rewarding experience. Just be certain the job is done right with no short cuts taken. Loren assured me that the short cuts can come back to bite you.
