My philosophy is to find the best condition and lowest priced example of cars that I love. That often means finding a year model that is not currently in favor as long as everything is up to par.
My 911 is one of the lightest (VERY tossable!) and the 1st year of power brakes and a fully galvanized body (I HATE rust). My vette is the 1st year C4 with aluminum heads (and VERY cheap), and my M3 is the 1st year with traction control and the torquey 3.2 engine (met all of my daily driver requirements).
Are there better year models of the cars I chose? Yes, but the ones I bought provided the best cost/return at the time I found them. Any well sorted 911 will serve you well for many years. Drive as many as you can, and then decide the features condition and price point that suits your needs.
