Angry '89 911 Rear suspension frame tear

G'day all,
Note the frame break that holds the rear control arm bushing. Is this a common problem on the 1989 Carrera? a quick welding of a new bracket? how dangerous is this to drive on?
Any help is appreciated.
all the best, Dave

That's your sway bar mount and it is a not-uncommon problem. You can buy a new, improved mount (e.g. from Pelican, Automotion) and weld it on. Shouldn't be dangerous, it'll make your car understeer more if anything. I wouldn't push it too hard til you fix it though.

Is it just me or does it look like someone else already welded it back on once? Is that not a bead I see in the second pic?

When the search function comes back on line look up WEVO. This was one of my favorite fixes so far. Talk about a new car.

^^^I got mine from Steve too. He walked me right through the opporation. The stock ones grind right off. The new ones conform to the curve of the frame and with care you can set them to have a nutral or zero load left to right...

Yeah Mat sure looks like someone tried to weld up the old one without replacing it. A couple of new ones and your good to go. I am quite surprised mine still has the originals and absolutely no signs of corrosion or fatigue. So much for the "northern cars" myth

I've been thinking about this issue. Some cars have a problem here and some don't. I have a guess that I want to run by you guys. could the cars that don't brake the sway-bar mounts have better shocks? What I mean by this is could the load stay on the shocks when cornering rather than transfering to the sway-bar?

good shocks = good mounts

bad shocks + bad mounts

I'm thinking that even the T-bars may be to blame???

What do you think?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't mention any names but I had to bring those (wevo)to the attention of a very successful club racer who also owns a very well respected shop here. He said we will just "build up some meat on the stock mounts" Buy the Wevo's.
