Default Was "Need a PPI in Denver" now "My first 911!!"

I found a 1987 Carrera near Denver 126K miles good candidate for a daily driver. Owner performed complete engine rebuild 15,000 miles ago (which was 4 years ago), with JE (9.9.1) pistons and Mahle Cylinders increased from 3.2 to 3.4. 964 grind on cams. Dyno-Pro tested before and after rebuild. DME-chipped. Full photo documentation on CD’s from teardown to rebuild with all invoices.

He seems like a super detailed oriented guy but this was his first rebuild on a P-car and I want to make sure it is as advertised.

I'm seriously considering pursuing this car and may need a good place to get a PPI in the Denver area. Any suggestions?

Grady Clay would be great. He is usually on the Pelican Board.

Grady knows his way around the 911 as well as anybody in the business, but he doesn't have his own shop. You'll need a place that can put it on a lift, and do compression/leakdown tests.

There are several outstanding Porsche shops around town. The best ones are:

North side - Eurosport Automotive (Dave Marshall)
Central - Storz Garage (Bob and Mike) or Eisenbud (John Eisenbud)
South side - Eurosport Ltd. (Greg Johnson)

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one and schedule a PPI. Do any of you have any concerns about the type of rebuid the owner did going from 3.2 to 3.4L? Should I be concerned? The clutch was looked at the time of the rebuild and deemed in good shape. He also installed the G50/G64 Clutch Release Shaft Quick Fix Kit and turbo oil line retractors.

What do you think?[ATTACH][ATTACH]Attachment 337745

My thought is that after 4 years and 15K miles if the engine is still good then he probably did it right. The car looks like it's in great shape, and worth proceeding with a PPI. I would have the shop pay special attention to the engine, have them review the documentation of the rebuild, etc. I PM'd you earlier but would probably recommend Storz, but only because I have no direct experience with Eurosport Ltd.

Out of curiosity, what is your current DD?

Either Eisenbuds or Storz. I recommend Eisenbuds. John is cynical but know the cars as well as anyone. It's where I would go.

Thanks, the car went to Eurosport yesterday and they forwarded me a report. The leakdown check reports the following: #1 5% #2 7% #3 7% #4 5% #5 6% #6 6% good-not great. They mentioned the engine may not have been broken-in correctly.

There are some other issues and the shop identified them as not deal breakers. I'm waiting for the shop to send me an estimate for the repairs. I haven't talked to the curtrent owner yet as I'm out of town. We'll see where we go from here.

Out of curiosity, what is your current DD?
04 Mazda 6 (which will continue to be the main DD) and a 02 Explorer (the token 4x4 for Colorado). Initially I wanted a garage queen but after driving a few 911s I decided to look at a well sorted car that I can drive not just look at.

What is considered a good leak down, under 5%?

Did they do the leak down this morning?

Anyway, I have heard good things about Eurosport, hopefully things work out for you, as a visual the car looks fantastic.
BTW, was this car ever repainted? I only ask since the front and real lower valances look non textured. It could be the photo?

Keep us posted!

I had Eurosport do a full PPI on a 964 C4 widebody I bought site unseen and they did an excellent job, I even had them address some issues I wanted taken care of. When I got the car I found their assesment via the PPI spot on.

Vino,
According to Pete Z's book (which is the only reference I have) a good 911 will have readings between 3 and 6% with the maximum factory allowed of 10%.

Body wise the car is probably an 8/10, a couple of dings here and there. The front of the car has rock chips you would find on a 126K miles car. The owner claims paint is original and I do not remember when I saw the car if it was textured or not.

In summary here's what the shop said (I took out all the details): interior above average condition for age exterior, minor dings around car, paint nice and glossy- car looks nice and drives nicely, no noticeable bad noises, handles nicely- seems like nice car

We now have to agree on a price.

Default Now my First 911

We went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 87 Carrera. She'll be coming home on Wednesday after a short stop at Eurosport for some needed maintenance.

Since joining Rennlist in December I went form wanting a garage queen with low mileage to a well sorted car, mileage is 126K but had a complete rebuild 15K miles ago. All of the previous candidates were $25K and above and I got this one for almost $10K less than I was willing to pay for the others. To get all the maintenance caught up I may have to spend a little under $1K.

The owner is a avid collector so the car comes with an incredible collection of memorabilia and reference books to include the Bentley. It comes with an extensive model collection, flag collection, manuals and original sales brochures. Porsche engine stand, and Porsche specific tools used in rebuild. Also includes any additional parts he had bought but hadn't replaced and any original parts he took off the car. Just in case I want to show the car. It also comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

All in all I feel pretty good about the purchase and I want to thank all the Rennlisters who provided me with advice during these past 3 months. I have learned a ton about these cars here as well as from Pete Z's book.

Thanks again!!!

Nice car, congrats.

My guess is that license plate will get cause people behind you to mutter disparaging comments under their breath.

Nice car, congrats! You'll have a sleeper w/ the 3.4 in there.

(Ed, in CO, plates stay w/ the previous owner so no fear of the comments - at least due to the plates!)
